About Me
I am a passionate advocate for the students I teach and have a natural capacity to make individuals feel comfortable in a 1-to-1 teaching environment. I believe in holistic teaching. Each student is an individual and their capacity to learn can often depend on how they’re feeling. Therefore I always look to adapt in lessons, ensuring that I’m meeting the needs of the student on the day of the lesson, rather than powering through with a plan that they may be struggling to engage with. Practically speaking, I give students options during the class, so that they can take responsibility for their learning by choosing the activity they feel is right for them. I ensure that homework is devised as a progression of the content covered in class, rather than giving predetermined tasks. And I constantly monitor their progress, by asking them to produce their work via live Google Drive documents. When it comes to essay writing, I take a supportive approach to my teaching, giving students differentiated resources that allow them to structure their responses, so that they appropriately cover the relevant assessment objectives. The feedback I give is rigorous and I always aim for students to not only understand the mark they’ve reached, but the practical next steps for them to elevate their articulation.
Recent tuition
Early Years to KS2
When Covid hit, I started tutoring this student from a very young age. I was helping her with her phonics and helped to learn how to read. I have been tutoring her for three years now and she is becoming an insightful intellectually curious young student. She is living in China, meaning that she is often exhausted after the demanding school structure, but we have continued with small activities to ensure that she is covering everything on the KS2 curriculum. In their internal end of year SPaG exam she received 80%.
KS3 English
I am currently tutoring this student to help them with their KS3 English education, whilst they live abroad in China. We have been working together for four years. Their main schooling is demanding of their energy so lessons are constructed to allow for that influence. They are making great progress through this catered learning and their writing style is becoming increasingly impressive.
iGCSE English
I tutored this student for their iGCSE Edexcel English exams. We worked together over a year and they were aiming to get a passing grade, so that they could continue their education at university. They had dyscalculia, meaning that they found processing information particularly difficult. This meant that we broke the processes down into sequential steps and wouldn’t progress until they client felt assured that they understood what they were doing. This was then repeated and consolidated over the period of teaching. They achieved the 6 that they were hoping for and are now at university studying child care.
English Language and Literature GCSE and English A Level
This student started with me whilst they were studying their AQA Lang/Lit GCSEs at St Christopher’s. At the time, they had dropped out of school and were contemplating resitting the year entirely. This was a result of their SEND. With my help they were able to press on with their learning and received 8s in their English. As a consequence of my teaching, they then decided to continue with English at A Level (Edexcel). After two years of teaching, they received an A*. They went to University of Sussex to read psychology.
English Literature A Level
This student was referred to me two years ago, to help with their AQA English Literature A Level. We studied together for two years. They were academically excellent from when I started with them, but when they sat their A Level – after I had only worked with them for a month or so – they received Bs. This was due, in part, to their complex mental health and SEN. During their retakes and with a full year of my teaching, they went on to achieve an A*. One of their exams received 100%. They went on to Bath to read psychology.
Hobbies
I really enjoy attending poetry events as they offer such a dynamic cross-section of our society. Each event offers an opportunity to self-reflect on my outlook and test how I see the world. Of course, reading is a big passion of mine (I wouldn’t be an English tutor if it weren’t!) Again, it’s an opportunity to pause and decompress after long days, but more profoundly allows me insight into other people’s stories and experiences.
