About Me

With a background in film directing, including an Academy Awards shortlist nomination, I bring a creative and highly personalised approach to tutoring. My style is rooted in building rapport and understanding what motivates each student, then connecting that motivation to the material they need to master.

My core tuition expertise lies in entrance exam preparation for some of the UK’s leading independent schools. These schools’ assessment processes often require young students to understand topics and processes that they may not have previously tackled – I support this by breaking all requirements down into clear, actionable steps or using storytelling and creative analogies.

I focus on meeting each student where they are and guiding them to the next stage with confidence and clarity. My aim is to keep sessions informal, down-to-earth and personable, so that students of all ages feel comfortable asking questions.

Recent tuition

I have over 18 years of tutoring experience, specialising in two key areas. Firstly, preparing students for a wide competitive 11+ and 13+ exams. My students have received offers from schools including Eton, Harrow, Radley, Westminster, Winchester and St Paul’s. Secondly, I provide guidance for any subject requiring exceptional writing processes, particularly for English at GCSE, A Level and at university.

As regards university support, I have assisted students preparing for interviews and guided others in crafting strong applications and personal statements for leading universities in the UK and overseas. My students have received offers from institutions including Imperial College London and have achieved distinctions at the London Film School. I’ve helped other students receive full scholarships, including a full scholarship to Georgia Tech (U.S. university). I have also worked with PhD students, helping to refine and edit their dissertations to ensure clarity, precision and readability.

Below is a snapshot of my recent tuition:

11+ and Interview Preparation (Eton Entrance Exam)

This student required support with English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning for the Eton entrance process. Over a year we combined exam practice with mock interviews. He was offered a scholarship at Eton, alongside offers from several other schools. I continue to tutor him.

11+ English, Maths and Reasoning (Winchester Entrance Exam)

I supported this student in preparing for the Winchester entrance process over twelve months. We focused on building strong foundations in English, Maths and Reasoning, alongside targeted exam practice and interview preparation. This student gained entry to Winchester.

English Essay Writing (GCSE, AQA Board)

This GCSE student struggled with structuring essays and articulating ideas under timed conditions. Over nine months of tuition, I broke down the writing process into clear, actionable steps. His clarity and organisation improved greatly, leading him to achieve a Grade 8 in English Language and a Grade 7 in Literature.

Mathematics (ISEE, US School Entrance Exam)

This student needed help preparing for the ISEE Maths section. We worked together over several months, strengthening problem-solving and exam stamina while developing strategies for timing and stress management. With targeted practice, the student achieved excellent results (8 out of 9) and gained entry to a top New York private school.

IB History

I supported this IB History student during COVID. We focused on structuring essays, developing critical arguments and managing exam technique under timed conditions. With tailored feedback and targeted practice, the student improved significantly with her understanding of history as well as writing essays.

Presentation Skills and Public Speaking (Undergraduate Support)

This student needed help preparing for an important university presentation. Through a series of tutorials, I refined the structure of his material, coached him in delivery and body language and built his confidence through rehearsal. He went on to deliver a standout presentation that received excellent feedback.

A Level History (Edexcel)

This A Level student needed support with writing clear and effective answers and essays. Over several months, we focused on structuring arguments, linking evidence to analysis, and developing stronger introductions and conclusions. Through targeted practice and feedback, the student’s ability to produce coherent, well-argued essays improved significantly.

University Applications and Personal Statements (US Ivy League)

I am currently supporting this student with applications and personal statements for highly selective universities including Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, NYU and the University of Pennsylvania. We brainstormed ideas, developed a strong first draft, and refined it through detailed feedback. I have also guided him and his parents on choosing universities aligned with his specific interests.

Personal Statement Writing (Undergraduate Applications)

I worked with this student to develop a strong personal statement for university applications. We focused on identifying unique experiences, structuring ideas clearly and writing with authenticity. This student secured multiple offers, including an offer from Imperial College London.

Master’s Thesis Support (Film, London Film School)

I mentored this student through the production and post-production of her master’s thesis film. We focused on refining the narrative clarity and overall structure of her work. Over several months of collaboration, she successfully completed her thesis and was awarded a distinction from the London Film School.

Hobbies

While I wouldn’t consider filmmaking a hobby, as I was formally trained in it, it is something I remain deeply passionate about. It allows me to explore ideas, tell stories and connect with people in meaningful ways.

I also enjoy travelling, hiking, paragliding, weightlifting and adventurous activities such as biking down volcanoes. These pursuits challenge me both physically and mentally, give me a sense of adventure and help me stay grounded and energised outside of work.

Testimonials

“Rahul is very good at developing a good rapport with my son, who has a very positive attitude towards his lessons and even puts maximum effort into homework set! Rahul’s techniques, focus and enthusiasm for work has improved since he has been having lessons with Rahul.”

11+ preparation

“My daughter struggled with her English, enough so that she had a burning hatred for it. It reflected in her GCSEs mocks, where she received a C and D. At about this time, we decided to get a tutor. What convinced me to hire Rahul was our initial phone call, in which he confided that he too hated English when he was my daughter’s age and didn’t see the point in it. He says this and yet he’s been shortlisted for the Academy Awards for his writing years later?! He proved to be the right tutor for my daughter, because he had the patience to teach her how to write, as most writers write. In addition, he showed her all the building blocks of well-structured essays. With this newfound understanding, my daughter’s confidence improved and her interest in English grew. This became the key for her improvement. In turn, I also noticed that her thinking became more refined as a result of the tutoring.”

English GCSE preparation
