"Oli tutored my son for his GSCE exams last year. Oli has been very supportive, encouraging, caring and consistent in his practice. He helped my son to gain confidence and to believe in himself while he developed a trusting relationship with Oli. The outcome was brilliant and very unexpected even for my son as he is now studying English A Levels, something that would have been unthinkable few years ago. We have been very pleased with Oli’s support."

My specialist subjects are English and Maths up to 11+, and English and Drama up to A Level and IB. My approach to tutoring is to find out where the subject and the student meet. From 15 years of tutoring experience, I have found that the best results come when the student discovers a latent interest in the subject. This is what worked for me in my own academic life. If I can link the subject to something the student is passionate about, then everything becomes easier. So my method is to find out about the student’s interests and tailor the subject to that. I am experienced in running theatre workshops so I know how to keep lessons engaging and fun. Obviously there are times when the student is not passionate about the subject at all. In these cases, I will stick to simple, practical methods that will help get them through. For example, providing them with a tool kit of how to approach an unseen poem. Or train the student to internalise a good essay structure, so that it is habitual by the time they get into an exam. I have taught many different students, with many different ways of learning, over the years and can adapt to their needs.
Prep school English and Maths
I tutored two siblings L and A at Trevor Roberts School in Swiss Cottage, in English and Maths. Both were struggling at school and their parents wanted some extra support a few days a week after school, over a period of two years. This kind of long-form preparation, without the pressure of exam preparation, was very rewarding, and allowed me to build up their engagement with the subjects. I would also provide them with assistance with piano practice. This was a successful experience, as we developed a strong bond and both eventually did extremely well in their SAT exams.
11+ English and Maths
I tutored 11+ preparation for a student, F. She had been struggling at school, not connecting with teachers and her parents were worried. I was able to give her sustained, focused attention in our online sessions. Concentrating on English, maths, Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning, I built up her confidence with past papers and mock exams. It was a pleasure to watch her gradually improve and eventually lead to success.
English GCSE (AQA)
N was having trouble with English GCSE. He did not have much enthusiasm for the subject in general and, more specifically, was struggling with essay writing and exam technique. I managed to communicate with him well. I found out he had a love of film and so I used films as a reference point when we were discussing his set texts. This proved to be a helpful way in for him. We simultaneously worked on paragraph structure. We then worked our way to full essay structure. In the lead-up to the exam, we had two sessions a week, doing timed practice exams and going through his answers together. This combination of finding a way into the subject and working on technique proved a winning one. His school had predicted his GCSE grade at 4 and, after our tuition, his final mark was 7.
Drama GCSE (Edexcel)
I tutored E in the run up to her Drama GCSE exam. E was a highly conscientious and gifted student, but she found she wasn’t receiving as much support as she needed in class due to frequent changes of teachers. In the many sessions in the three month lead up to her exams, I focused on exam technique, as this was her main area of concern. I helped her find quotations from set texts that she could memorise, and we did many practice exams. I was able to be a stable, consistent presence amongst all the changes at school, and her final grade was a 9.
Jonathan was studying at an international school in Singapore. He was having trouble connecting to the subject, especially close analysis of poetry. I was able to give him a toolbox for approaching the poetry, as well as working on clear essay structure. This led to Jonathan making great strides in his performance in English while we worked together.
UK drama school application
I tutored Ukrainian student D online, as he was living in Israel. He was applying for UK drama schools. D’s English was basic when we started, so the tutoring was quite a challenge. I had to work out a way to improve his English, help him find texts that would be right for him to perform, and help him with his acting. It was a process that took over a year and a half. But we got on very well and the end result, with D being accepted into East 15 drama school, was one of the most rewarding of my tutoring career.
English as a Second Language
I tutored M in English elocution and pronunciation over a period of six months. He was having trouble passing the oral component of his medical exam. While English was his second language, his vocabulary and grammar were very good, but he struggled with the pronunciation of certain vowel sounds. After an initial consultation, I located what his weakest sounds were and developed a daily practice programme suited to him. I then was able to help him with tips for assured public speaking, which enabled him pass his exams and helped in his professional life.
I am passionate about writing. I write professionally and for fun. My biggest thrill is learning how to engage an audience and tell a story that is unexpected and inevitable. Apart from that I love reading literature and history and, when I can, playing cricket.
