"Katie tutored both my children on Maths and English (and some entrance test prep) and they loved their sessions with her! She quickly understood their areas for development and tailored her sessions to meet their needs. They both made excellent progress and always looked forward to their tutoring sessions. After almost a year, they are both still asking for sessions with Katie!"

Having worked as a classroom teacher for over 8 years, I have an in-depth understanding of the most effective teaching techniques to ensure progress in learning. When working with a new tutee, I take time and give focus to building a warm, positive relationship. I also take an interest in the students’ interests and passions and integrate these into the learning wherever appropriate. I recognise the importance of students setting and reaching goals to take ownership of their learning experience and to allow them to feel a sense of success and pride in the progress they have made. Based on these goals, I carefully scaffold learning experiences to ensure that the sessions both support students with their areas of difficulty and extend the students in their areas of strength, to have the maximum impact on their progress and development.
I tutor students for 7+, 11+, 13+ exams and KS2 SATs preparation. I also prepare students for school entrance interviews.
I tutored W in Maths, English and Non-Verbal Reasoning for the 7+ entrance assessment. W was a naturally bright boy who was confident, keen to be challenged and able across subject areas. The main point of focus to prepare W for these tests was to provide him with exposure to all possible content for the test and ensure aptitude across these areas, introduce non-verbal reasoning activities and work on exam technique, such as carefully reading and understanding the questions before answering. He made good progress during this time and was able to approach the exam with confidence. He went on to successfully sit the 7+ examination.
I tutored M on Maths, English and Non-Verbal Reasoning for the 11+ entrance assessment. We worked on these areas over a 6-month period. M was a high achieving reader and writer with good non-verbal reasoning skills. Academically, he required the most support with his mathematic skills, particularly the accuracy of his written calculations, which was a core focus within our sessions. His other problem area was remaining calm and confident in test scenarios. We worked on building up his confidence and exam technique in his sessions and he went on to successfully sit the 11+ examination.
ISEB Common Pre-Test Prep
I tutored D on Maths and English in preparation for sitting the ISEB Common Pre-Test exam for Charterhouse School. The student was from Hong Kong and, while she demonstrated excellent reading comprehension, she struggled with understanding more Anglo-centric texts. We worked on a variety of reading and writing tasks to extend her bank of known vocabulary, to familiarise her with more classic British texts and improve her Literacy skills to the level required for success in the entrance exams. The student made considerable progress in these areas during our time working together.
Maths and English for British International School
I tutored A in both Maths and English to support improvement in his ability within these subjects. In English, A showed good comprehension but struggled with writing tasks. By tapping into his interests and building on his abilities, he made excellent improvement during the year that we worked together. A’s parents also wanted to ensure that he was placed in a high Maths set on entry to the Kellett School (The British International School of Hong Kong) upon entry in Year 7. The main focus of our Maths sessions were to ensure that A correctly read and comprehended questions before attempting to answer, as well as carefully estimating and checking the accuracy of his answers. Our work supported his improvement and he was placed in the ‘high Maths set’ as his parents had hoped he would.
CAT4 Test Preparation
I worked with M on preparation for the CAT4 Test, as her parents were planning to send her to an Independent Prep in the UK. Our sessions together focused on her verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, spatial ability and quantitative reasoning in order to prepare for the Cognitive Abilities Test. Through this focused preparation, M exceeded her parents’ expectations and achieved a score that resulted in the school proceeding her application to the next stage and offering for her to attend an interview.
I tutored D to prepare for a 13+ screening test. The focus of the test was to identify if she was able to apply to take the 13+ assessment to attend Charterhouse School. Following an initial assessment of strengths and areas for development, I supported D with specific areas of development in Maths and English. We worked closely on extending D’s bank of known vocabulary to improve comprehension in English. In Maths, the focus was on careful reading and understanding of the question and picking the most effective and efficient strategy to answer the question. D was focused and hardworking in our sessions and performed highly in her screening test after the time we worked together.
Hobbies and Interests
I am a keen rock climber and can often be found in the climbing gym or bouldering outdoors on the weekends. I am also a musical person and still love to play the piano whenever I have a spare few minutes. Fitness is important to me, so I try to get to the gym at least 3 times per week for strength training sessions.
