About Me
I have taught English since 2012, both as a private tutor and qualified classroom teacher. Having encountered a diverse range of individuals, I am experienced in adapting my lessons to suit the particular needs of each child. In all lessons, I work with flexibility, tailoring my approach to ensure each pupil has the best chance of success. My teaching style is kind, warm and direct and I maintain a good rapport with the children and young people I teach.
Recent tuition
I provide tuition for school entrance examinations, mainly 11+, 12+ and 13+. My students have been awarded places at top schools including Dulwich College (two scholarships), King’s College School (one scholarship), Eton College, St Paul’s School, Westminster School, City of London School (one scholarship), Harrow School (Clay Prize awarded), Alleyn’s School, Whitgift School (one scholarship), Radley College, Haileybury and Imperial Service College and Mill Hill School.
Below is a snapshot of my recent tuition:
11+ English for both the Dulwich College and Whitgift entrance examinations
I tutored this pupil in preparation for his 11+ examinations. Together, we worked on his comprehension and creative writing skills, developing his ability to identify language techniques, making accurate inferences and interpreting textual detail. We also worked on his skills in planning and structuring his creative writing effectively. This pupil made steady progress and was awarded a place at both Dulwich College and Whitgift. At the end of the tutoring period, he told his father that he had really enjoyed the English lessons.
12+ English for the Churcher’s College entrance examination
I tutored this pupil online for over a year whilst she attended a school in America. This pupil was an advanced reader with strong skills in English. The focus of our lessons was to ensure she had excellent examination technique and could perform consistently well under test conditions. I worked to ensure lesson activities always stimulated and challenged her. She learnt new, sophisticated vocabulary. I gave her high-level example answers to encourage her to be ambitious and perceptive in her written responses. She enjoyed the lessons and was offered a scholarship to Churcher’s College.
13+ English for the Dulwich College entrance examination
I tutored this pupil whilst he attended Hill House School. Over six months, we worked to improve his comprehension and creative writing skills. We also worked to ensure his proficiency in examination technique. Initially, this pupil did not enjoy reading at all, so we looked for books to interest him and we focused on building a daily habit of reading. This was essential to strengthen his language skills overall. Over the next few months, this pupil’s progress became evident in the increasing quality of his written work. Not only did he succeed in gaining his place at Dulwich College, he also surprised himself by becoming a keen reader of fiction and autobiography.
13+ English for Emanuel School entrance examination
I tutored this pupil intensively for two weeks before his entrance examination. He lacked confidence and skill in English and often struggled to concentrate. Together, we worked on his examination technique and targeted his comprehension and creative writing skills, finding ways to improve whilst ensuring his familiarity with practice papers. The lessons helped to boost his confidence and make him feel prepared. He was successful in gaining a place at Emanuel.
English KS2, Year 4
I tutored this pupil for three months online during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the aims of the tutoring was to spark interest and enjoyment in the subject. I incorporated many games and playful elements to the lesson to engage this pupil’s attention. I found out about his interests and designed lessons on topics that he wanted to learn more about. This engaged his curiosity whilst developing his English skills. This pupil enjoyed sports and competition, so I included a competitive edge to the lessons and incentivised activities with a point system. Over the course of the lessons, he became increasingly detailed and imaginative in his work, showing a positive response to the lessons tailored for him.
Hobbies
I have had a lifelong passion for reading and writing. Among my favourite authors are George Eliot, John Steinbeck and Zadie Smith. I studied creative writing at university, and have always enjoyed producing poetry, scripts and stories.
