About Me

I have been a senior school leader and former Head of Mathematics at a highly regarded London independent preparatory school, where I led 11+ preparation and supported pupils in securing places at leading senior schools. I completed the Teach First programme and hold a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from UCL. I currently work as a Mathematics Consultant, supporting schools nationally to strengthen curriculum, teaching quality, and academic outcomes.

My teaching is bespoke and highly personalised. I begin by identifying each pupil’s strengths and areas for development and then design lessons that build deep understanding rather than superficial technique. In mathematics, I emphasise conceptual clarity, precise reasoning, and flexible problem-solving. In English and reasoning, I develop comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical thinking, alongside explicit preparation for 11+ assessment formats.

My approach is informed by years at a senior level in the independent preparatory sector with experience successfully preparing children for senior school entrance exams. I have prepared children successfully for entry into St Paul’s Girls and Boys, Westminster, Latymer Upper, Wetherby, Godolphin and Latymer and more.

Recent tuition

11+ St Paul’s Girls School

I tutored this student, an exceptional mathematician, preparing for 11+ entry to highly selective London schools. We focused on deep problem-solving, mathematical reasoning and competition-style questions, including the Junior Mathematics Challenge. She achieved offers from all schools applied to and is now thriving at St Paul’s Girls’ School.

11+ English and Mathematics, Independent School Entry (SEN support)

I supported this student, who has dyslexia, with 11+ preparation. She initially found learning challenging but was highly motivated. I adapted teaching through structured, multi-sensory approaches and built her confidence steadily. She made exceptional progress across English and Maths and secured an offer from her first-choice independent school.

11+ Independent School and English as an Additional Language Support

I taught this student who arrived from Ukraine with no English. We began with intensive language support alongside core Maths. Within two years, she became fluent in English and developed exceptional mathematical ability, achieving Gold in the Primary Maths Challenge and gaining an academic scholarship to a leading London senior school.

KS2 Maths and English

I tutored this student in English and Mathematics to build confidence and secure core skills across KS2. We focused on reading comprehension, writing structure and arithmetic fluency, alongside problem-solving. The student made excellent progress, moving from below expected standard to above, and developed strong independence in learning.

Year 7 Maths

I supported this student in her first year at a highly demanding independent school, where she initially found the pace and depth of mathematics challenging. We focused on securing core concepts, building problem-solving strategies and developing confidence in lessons. She made excellent progress, moving from struggling to keeping pace with her class and contributing confidently.

Hobbies

I love both running and cryptic crosswords, just not at the same time! I’m drawn to cryptic crosswords because I genuinely enjoy the logic of them. There’s something really satisfying about unpicking a clue and getting to the answer. Running is the opposite for me. It’s where I switch off and feel completely free. I’ve won several trail races and love the challenge as much as the feeling of being out in it.

Testimonials

“I first met Emma when she was the excellent head of Mathematics at my twin son and daughter’s prep school. Observing her over six years I was deeply impressed at her ability to meet their very different needs within the same class. She stretched and challenged my son who is a talented and enthusiastic mathematician, and also encouraged and engaged my daughter who has dyscalculia, without intimidating her.

In the run up to the 11+ we were looking for extra tutoring support for both children. I was delighted that Emma agreed to help. Over several months she helped them in a range of subjects, working with them to secure their knowledge. Most importantly, no matter how hard Emma was working, the sessions were always a pleasure, never intimidating or stressful for the children in any way.

As a result both children approached the 11+ process notably relaxed, confident and happy. Emma also acted as a consultant as we considered which senior schools to apply for. Her guidance, based in deep understanding of the current education landscape, together with her years of experience and thoughtful consideration of the children as individuals was priceless.

Emma’s work with the children resulted in them gaining immediate offers from all the schools they applied to. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.”
