Geography Admissions Test (GAT)
If you are planning to apply to study Geography at Oxford for 2025 entry or beyond, there is some significant news: candidates will no longer be required to sit the Geography Admissions Test (GAT).
Previously, applicants were asked to take the GAT as part of the competitive selection process. However, Oxford’s Department of Geography has removed this requirement. This means that greater emphasis will now be placed on the personal statement, academic record, and interview performance.

What Does This Mean for Applicants?
Without the GAT, your application will be judged primarily on:
- Your UCAS application (including predicted grades)
- Your personal statement
- Your school reference
- Your performance during the Oxford interview
Achieving high A Level grades remains essential, typically A*AA for Geography, and demonstrating your passion for the subject through your statement and interview will be even more critical.

Key Dates and Deadlines
- 15 October 2025: Deadline for submitting your UCAS application to Oxford.
- November to December 2025: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview.
- January 2026: Offers will be made.
Make sure you plan ahead, especially if you are balancing schoolwork, Oxbridge preparation, and other commitments.
How to Strengthen Your Geography Application
Without a test score to rely on, here are some practical ways to enhance your application:
1. Build an Outstanding Personal Statement
Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for Geography. This might include referencing:
- Books and articles you’ve read (e.g., “Prisoners of Geography” by Tim Marshall)
- Lectures, online courses, or summer schools attended
- Relevant fieldwork or independent projects

Oxford interviews for Geography are designed to test your critical thinking, analytical skills, and passion for the subject. You may be asked to interpret unfamiliar material, such as a graph, map, or article.
Mock interviews and one-to-one coaching can dramatically boost your confidence and polish your communication skills.
