Tristan

"Z joined her Geography GCSE class late (at the beginning of year 11) so Tristan needed to cover the entire specification to prepare her successfully. Z finds that he explains things in an extremely clear and concise way. She truly has enjoyed her lessons with him so much so that she is considering doing Geography for A levels!"

About Me

Teaching is both very complex and very simple. Very complex in the sense that the cognitive science behind learning is somewhat opaque and we still don’t know much of what goes on in our brains as we learn. It is also simple, in the sense that students need to 1) be taught lots of ‘knowledge’, 2) piece together knowledge to build understand of concepts and 3) deepen this understanding and their abilities to express this understanding through improved communication skills, both written and oral. My approach to tutoring revolves around reducing the complexity in teaching. My students praise me for the clarity of my explanations and how they ‘get’ things when I teach. I focus on the knowledge initially – as without this, students simply can’t access much of the content. Sufficient grounding on the essentials makes students feel successful – a hugely overlooked aspect of teaching that is vital for children to flourish in their learning (indeed, it is the same for adults!) When students feel successful, they feel confident, and when they feel confident, they want to learn! It is this virtuous circle that I aims to get students experiencing in my tutoring.

Recent tuition

I have recently prepared a student for the Winchester entrance exam in Geography, and have prepared students for 13+ at schools such as Dulwich College. In my day job, I am responsible for the TSA – Thinking Skills Assessment – for Oxbridge sixth form candidates. I run the sessions, which prepare our year 12 students to apply to Oxbridge and pass this entrance test.

I tutored Z (Bradfield College) in GCSE geography (WJEC). We worked together for one academic year. Z was late to study geography – she had missed out on much of the syllabus as she joined her year 11 class late. Z made significant progress and is looking forward to taking her exam in June 2023. She enjoyed sessions so much she is thinking of taking geography for A level.

I tutored B (More House School) in GCSE geography (Edexcel). We worked for one academic year as B had recently arrived in the UK and therefore had missed out on significant amounts of the GCSE syllabus. B made huge progress: she was predicted a grade 5 but ended up with a grade 7. She made significant improvements in both her understanding of the content and exam technique.

I tutored G to successfully pass his Winchester College entrance exam in Geography. G had no previous geography experience, having arrived in the UK from Canada before attending a prep school in London.

C is a student at Radley College. He has found our sessions ‘extremely helpful’ as he now feels confident in securing a top grade in his upcoming IGCSE (Edexcel) in Geography. C has found his exam technique and knowledge of the fieldwork section of papers 1 and 2 improving dramatically.

R is a student at a top private school in Mumbai, India. She is studying the Cambridge IGCSE Geography syllabus. I helped her with her coursework project, advising on the enquiry questions, methodology, write up, analysis and conclusion. Her grade in the assignment went from a 4 (C) to a 9 (A*) with my assistance.

Hobbies and Interests

Testimonials

“Thank you so much for all your help with geography throughout year 11. I got an A grade – a grade 7 – which I simply would not have got close to without your help. Thank you so much.”

“Tristan helped G prepare for his Winchester entrance exam in May 2023. He covered the entire Common Entrance syllabus, which G had not been taught as he moved to the UK recently. G found Tristan’s tutoring hugely useful – he didn’t understand much of what was going in lessons at school. Tristan successfully identified his knowledge gaps and developed his understanding significantly – in such a short space of time!”
