Steven

“Steven has been tutoring my daughter Lara in maths for the past 3 months. Lara is a Year 10 student (now going into Year 11) at Wimbledon High School. Steven helped Lara achieve good level results at her end of the year exams (equivalent to A), working in particular on strengthening her confidence and understanding of the more complex parts of the curriculum. Steven is very competent, conscientious, punctual and hard working. He is also very patient and was able to make the lessons always pleasant and interesting. Lara was always looking forward to her tutoring and confirmed each time the subject was much clearer.”

About Me

I have worked as a tutor since 2008. I tutor a number of subjects included Maths, Engineering and Physics. I also provide support with 11+ Entrance Exams.

I have a deep and extensive subject knowledge. I get on well with people and am very conscientious. I like to focus on answering exam questions, giving appropriate teaching-led input, whilst developing student independence and confidence in answering questions on their own.

Recent tuition

I have worked with over 50 students, accumulating more than 150 hours of tutoring experience. I am able to tutor a wide range of academic levels from GCSE through to Undergraduate Level.

Please find below a snapshot of my tuition experience.

GCSE Foundation Maths

Emily lacked confidence in Maths. I met her weekly for an hour over the course of several months. Her confidence improved greatly as she saw that with explanation she could understand topics that used to baffle her. She always did very well in her homework, showing an independent grasp of the subject matter.

IGCSE

Tafara was a bright student who wanted extra support and practice to get the A* that was in his reach. We practiced plenty of past exam paper questions to fill in any gaps in his knowledge and improve his speed and confidence. He got the grade he was capable of.

Jacqueline had many gaps in her knowledge and had performed poorly in a recent mock exam. We went through her exam paper and reattempted those subject areas that she was weak in. With some explanation and prompting, Jacqueline was able to recall the appropriate theory and practice applying it to problem solving.

Simran was an exceptionally shy student and was clearly uncomfortable with answering question in front of me. However, it was clear that she was bright and attentive. I found that after explanation of the theory and showing her some worked examples, she was able to answer challenging questions. We had to try different learning styles before we found one that worked for her, but I am a firm believer that every student is different and tutoring needs to be tailored to them. She greatly improved in confidence in the time I spent with her.

GCSE & Sixth Form Entrance Exam (Kings College School, Wimbledon)

Lara was a bright student whose real passion lay in the humanities. I not only helped her with her GCSE Maths, but wanted to prepare her for entrance exams for an elite school. We went through challenging question from the entrance exams for Eton and Rugby, looking at questions which required more thought about what methods were appropriate to use and needed more of a problem-solving mindset. Lara made huge strides.

A-Level Maths

My initial assessment of Angharad was that she was a bright student who had some gaps in her knowledge, someone who was an A student, who might either drop to a B or get an A*. She progressed tremendously and attained an A* in the subject and went on to study Chemistry at Imperial College.

Eman was a very bright, ambitious student who wanted to study at elite universities.  Focusing on trigonometry and statistics, we ensured a thorough understanding of the theory before looking at challenging questions together. I tried to stretch Eman, attempting problems which required more thought in choosing the appropriate theory to apply rather than mechanistically using a method. Over the course of a Christmas holiday, Eman really used this time of intense tutoring to fill in gaps in her knowledge and stretch herself in solving difficult problems.

IB Maths

Kaila was a bright student who was forthright and would take a lead in lessons. We had an hour session over several months. Maths was not her favourite subject, but she gained in confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.

Foundation Degree Electrical Engineering & Renewable Energy Systems

Dominic was an electrician who wanted to gain academic qualifications so that he could get a graduate job. I helped Dominic with his understanding of Maths and Electronics theory over several hour-long sessions. He gained in confidence and knowledge and got his degree, while also gaining a Graduate Electrical Engineer job.

BSc Mechanical Engineering (SEN Dyslexia)

Milad is dyslexic and has issues with comprehension. We had both face-to-face and online lessons for 3 years. He made strong progress in his coursework and was complimented on his achievement in his Final Year Project. I helped him with his research skills and his communication skills, and he  gained some impressive marks in exams that I helped him with.

Adult Learning

Siri had taken many years out of work to raise her children. She was considering becoming a Maths teacher and wanted to brush up on her Maths. We got a GCSE textbook and would meet for an hour a week to go through it. Some topics came back very easily, others were more of a struggle. I had to constantly adjust my pace with her. It was a very enjoyable experience for both of us and Siri did wonderfully well. In the end, she decided to become an accountant rather than a Maths teacher, but I’m glad we rekindled a love of mathematics together.

Hobbies and Interests

In my spare time I enjoy reading and walking.
