My creative, engaging and thorough approach has helped pupils secure entry into top independent schools, re-discover their love of learning, and achieve well beyond their predicted grades. I monitor and assess my pupils’ progress, communicating these proactively with parents and agencies, and setting ambitious targets which feed through to results. My pupils consistently achieve higher grades than predicted. Their motivation and engagement with their studies increases throughout our time working together and they have gone on to study at top independent schools in the UK. My resources are tailored to meet different course specifications and are designed around the needs and learning preferences of pupils and families, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. Ahead of examinations, this includes revision support (revision timetabling and technique, exam skills, providing past papers, marking mock exams), in addition to longer-term mentoring support to help children and young people to grow in confidence and enthusiasm, and the provision of educational consulting services to parents.
I provide support with university applications across a range of subjects, including Oxford and Cambridge. I also prepare students for top independent school entrance exams, including 7+, 11+ and 13+. My pupils have gained entry to many schools over the years – most recently, Latymer, Oundle and Highgate.
GCSE Revision and Exam Technique
I provided a holistic revision and exam technique programme to a GCSE student who was very intelligent, but struggling to translate this into top results due to learning difficulties. I designed their revision timetable for their 11 GCSE subjects, taught them revision skills, provided them with mock test and in-depth feedback (in humanities subjects), and helped them to get better at time management during exams and structuring their answers. We carried out an intensive programme over the Easter holidays. Alongside this, I provided education consultancy services to his parent, which included advice on the students’ longer-term academic aspirations, how to maximise their extra-curricular learning opportunities, and deal with behaviour from their child that disrupted their homework sessions and their siblings’ homework sessions. As a result of this work, the student achieved all 8s and 9s in their GCSEs, and went on to be a more focused, applied student in their A Level studies.
11+ Preparation and English Literature and Language GCSE
I provided tutoring to a family with 2 children over a number of years. This included in reading, creative writing, comprehension, building towards the 11+ at a young age, the 11+ itself, interviews for secondary school, and English Literature and Language GCSE. The children successfully gained entry into Oundle and Oakham, and one is on track to receive top results in his first graded coursework for English Language GCSE.
RS, History and English GCSE Intensive Revision
I provided short-term intensive revision support for 3 students at private schools who were predicted Ds and Us in their GCSEs in Religious Studies, History, and English (Edexcel, AQA). This was a daily programme for 2 weeks ahead of the public examinations, and so the focus was on technique and time management. One of the students faced additional challenges as English was his second language. The students all passed, with 2 achieving Bs and As, a significant improvement on their predicted grades. This demonstrated huge progress given how last minute the support was ahead of their exam dates.
English Literature and Language GCSE
I provided Year 9 support in English Literature and Language to a child who was struggling with engagement (GCSE board – AQA). I designed a comprehensive programme around his needs, which focused on reinvigorating his interest in reading, writing, and learning, and went above and beyond the syllabus, while remaining tied to its core elements. I also provided mentoring support to him, as he was struggling with social isolation and anxiety. He went on to achieve brilliant grades in his GCSE English, which my tutoring provided the foundation for, and his parents have remarked on how far he has come in terms of communication, listening, and social skills.
Cambridge Admissions Preparation
I mentored and tutored a student during their application to study English Literature at Cambridge. This included revision ahead of the ELAT (English Literature Admissions Test), Personal Statement drafting support, and mock interviews. I also provided help with their A Level English Literature coursework, which they were graded an A* in. C was offered a place at Churchill College, Cambridge (and will begin in Sept 2023).
I am a writer – of novels and short stories. I love the imaginative exploration that writing provides, alongside an understanding of technique and form, and I draw on this in my approach to tutoring creative writing to a range of ages. I also sing, play piano and guitar, and run a book club. Alongside this, I work part-time in Westminster as a senior policy advisor to Ministers. This gives me an in-depth understanding of the political system and economics (my experience is largely at HM Treasury) that I have also deployed in my tutoring, such as for university applications for degrees in politics and economics.
