 About Me

My specialist subjects are Creative Writing and English Language. I also provide tuition in all subjects up to the age of 12.

I am an experienced, enthusiastic teacher, passionate about working with young people and using creative arts as a medium to promote self-confidence, awareness and an increased clarity of expression. By demystifying the creative process and making it accessible to a wide variety of young people, regardless of their abilities or background, I enable students to produce their own prose and poetry, creating work they can be proud of. I have been writing for many years and am the author of three historical novels (The Poet’s Wife, The Girl and the Sunbird & The Secret Life of Alfred Nightingale) and a memoir. I have had many short stories published in literary magazines as well as a number of articles published on a variety of lifestyle, travel, parenting & environmental themes.

Recent tuition

I have taught young people for over ten years, providing creative writing workshops (known as ‘Magic Pencil’) for primary school children and at community centres, as well as teaching English and giving private piano classes. I have worked with young people from a variety of backgrounds and in several different countries, including the UK, Spain, Guatemala, India and Kenya. I particularly enjoy working with children and teenagers, drawing out the innate creative abilities that all young people possess with the added benefits of consolidating literacy and communication skills and fostering self-esteem.

I am also a qualified EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher and have had numerous teaching jobs with both young people and adults, helping them to grow in confidence with their abilities in spoken and written English.

To give some specific examples of recent work, I have been giving one-on-one online creative writing sessions to an eleven year old girl. She is a keen writer and always scribbling down stories and ideas for stories, but rarely getting beyond the first page. I was contacted by her mother to help her stay motivated with her writing and also to provide some structured tips to get beyond the first page and create a full story.

In Kenya, I worked with groups of school children who spoke English as a second language. I found that a wonderful way to increase their confidence with written (and spoken) English was to help them create their own poems, using the wealth of existing poetry written for young people as an inspiration and spring board. Creating shorter, concise pieces of work in this way helped the children to focus on the importance of each and every word and can feel less daunting than writing an entire story, so I am a big fan of using poetry to help young people create something they can be really proud of.

Hobbies and Interests

I am always writing, whether it is jotting ideas down for stories and poems, blogging, shaping pieces of prose or working on my novel. I also love music, photography, yoga and travel and seeking out adventures with my family.

Client Testimonials

“My daughter was lucky enough to join a wonderful creative writing class after school called Magic Pencil, run by Rebecca. Sitting outside in a beautiful garden, they were inspired to write poetry and stories and to make little books of their “work”.  My daughter is dyslexic, but creative, so struggling in English at school. Magic Pencil gave her the confidence and imagination to enjoy reading and writing in a very free, yet structured environment. She went on to obtain the highest mark in her year group in her English Common Entrance exam. I have no doubt that those early days at Magic Pencil set her on the road to loving reading, creating stories and poetry comprehension. Rebecca has a passion for words that she is eager to pass on to our children.”

“Nifa & Renae spent the weekend writing short stories on the laptop. They are really into writing. All thanks to you and Magic pencil! You have made such a big difference in their lives.”
