Peter T

“Peter has been Tutoring my son for the last couple of months in preparation for taking his Maths GCSE a year early in Year 10. My son has benefited greatly from the time he has spent with Peter and now has a much clearer and confident approach to the more difficult topic areas he was unsure about. Peter is very reliable and knowledgeable; his teaching style has been very successful with my son and I would not hesitate to recommend Peter to anyone looking for a tutor.”

About Me

I have been working as a tutor since 2012, supporting students with Physics and Maths. I tend to anchor my approach to the question ‘what activities does the student need to engage with to achieve the desired learning outcome’. Additionally I encourage students, as far as possible, to make conceptual connections between aspects of the course they are following that they might not have previously considered. I am always alert to opportunities to help my students with their revision and exam technique, and will move the focus of lessons more in that direction as exams approach.

I have experience at a wide range of academic levels, from GCSE to third year Cambridge supervisions. I have a thoughtful and adaptive tutoring approach, informed by my experience and largely influenced by the Higher Education Academy’s Teaching Associates Programme which I completed in 2016. I have a deep academic commitment to the subjects I teach.

Recent tuition

Please find below a snapshot of my tuition experience.

GCSE Maths (AQA)

I tutored ‘R’ for two years throughout his GCSE Maths. My work with him emphasised understanding and practicing fundamental topics. ‘R’ achieved a Grade 5 in his exams – this represented an improvement of 1-2 divisions over his predicted grade when we started.

GCSE Maths (AQA)

I am working with G in the build up to her exams. We have been largely practicing and reinforcing fundamentals and working on general mathematical fluency and confidence to support the transition to more difficult topics. ‘G’ has self-reported an improvement in confidence, and her teachers have remarked on improved performance in class tests.

GCSE Physics (AQA)

My brief as a tutor, when working with ‘J’, has been to provide clarity and guidance without demanding significant extra work. We have largely been troubleshooting class problem sets and test questions. ‘J’s self-reported confidence with material previously studied, and with tackling new topic areas, has increased. Mock exams are now underway, after which definite progress will be measurable.

A-Level Maths (Edexcel)

L’s marks in modules previously studied were already strong, averaging around 80. Our lessons have been somewhat of a fine-tuning exercise, based around troubleshooting tough past paper and textbook questions. ‘L’ achieved scores of 96% (Mechanics) and 100% (Core) in the recent mocks for the final exam series, so our work together has enabled an improvement from firm A-grade results to almost flawless facility with the required level of exam questions.

Undergraduate Physics

I supervised ‘X’ in undergraduate Physics for one term during my PhD at Cambridge. ‘X’ was struggling somewhat with the course I was supervising, which could have prevented them from continuing to study in fourth year. I helped them trace back conceptual difficulties with the course and get on top of them. ‘X’ successfully continued on to fourth year study and is now studying for a PhD.

Hobbies and Interests

Middle distance running; cycling; classical music and clarinet.
