About Me

My approach to tutoring is centred on meeting each student at their current level and engaging them through real-world applications of economics, as well as connections to other subjects they enjoy. I believe that learning is best accomplished when the material resonates with the student’s experiences and interests, so I tailor my examples and discussions accordingly. My style is heavily influenced by the Oxbridge tutorial format, meaning I place a strong emphasis on dialogue rather than lecturing. This interactive style allows students to freely ask questions, challenge ideas, and deepen their understanding by actively participating in the learning process.

In terms of techniques and methodologies, I focus on breaking down complex concepts into manageable pieces, then gradually building on those fundamentals. I find it especially helpful to incorporate case studies, current events, and cross-disciplinary themes to demonstrate how economics influences—and is influenced by—various real-world factors. Should a student wish to go beyond the standard curriculum—perhaps in preparation for university-level economics—I am more than happy to supplement lessons with advanced reading materials and university resources. Through these methods, my goal is to nurture both intellectual curiosity and academic confidence, ensuring that students not only grasp the core content but also appreciate its broader relevance. Ultimately, I am flexible in my approach, always ready to adjust the pace, depth, or style of instruction to suit a student’s evolving needs and aspirations.

The longer-term Oxbridge consultation work depends on what the student is looking for, but examples of what I’ve done in the past is designed around strengthening candidacy for Oxbridge applications. This involves assistance for essay competitions, International Economics Olympiad preparation (many of students have won Gold medals at national and international level), introductory courses for 1st year mathematical economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. These are based on combination of public and private materials and always seek to apply concepts to modern economic events using things like FT, podcasts, Economist, substacks. I also provide guidance on modern academic literature on topics of interest for the student that can be integrated into the PS (articles and books). Finally, something that I’ve found really helps students stand out and I don’t see being recommended elsewhere is attending academic conferences – most actually have registration options for the public (and there’s an increasing number being held online). So I’ve suggested conferences for students to go to, then gone over the list of papers being presented and discussed how to get most out of attending.

Recent tuition

I have done extensive University preparation (TMUA, mock interviews) for Cambridge Economics, Oxford Economics and Management, Oxford Economics and History, Economics PPE. I have also done mock interviews for Imperial Economics, Finance, and Data Science.

Here is a snapshot of my recent tuition:

IB Economics, Mathematics, Theory of Knowledge

I tutored this student (Kuala Lumpur International School) for IB HL Economics, HL Mathematics, and Theory of Knowledge over the course of two years for four hours a week. He was a dedicated student but struggled to master the more difficult questions in mathematics exams that required original thought. I guided him through problem solving techniques and exam approaches to maximise marks – he scored 7s in both subjects.

Cambridge Economics

I offered this student long-term support for an application to study Economics at Homerton College, Cambridge. The student was very strong mathematically, but had not done much reading or super-curricular activities around the subject. I curated a reading list for the student, supervised their John Locke Institute Essay (top 0.5% shortlist), and advised they attend some academic conferences put on by the Young Scholars Initiative. This left them well-placed to discuss both academic and practical topics in an interview context, and led to their successful admission to Homerton.

UCAS Economics

I assisted this student (Harrow) with their UCAS applications. They had applied in the previous year and been rejected from the universities they were interested in attending (LSE, Warwick, UCL). Previous year’s feedback was that the personal statement was quite weak. I looked at it and found that, indeed, it was likely a reason they had been rejected, as it listed many activities without going into sufficient depth or telling a coherent narrative about how why they had undertaken each activity. I directed him to craft a story focussed on economic development, drawing on his experiences living in both Nigeria and the UK, integrating his work experiences. He has been offered a place to LSE for International Social and Public Policy.

Cambridge Economics

I assisted this student applying for Clare College Economics. She had a strong academic background and an interest in the economics of social mobility, but was unable how to demonstrate this. I guided her in completing an empirical project using data from Harvard’s online data repository and regression discontinuity techniques. Furthermore, we were able to identify limitations in the previous literature and implement new techniques to overcome these. This project formed a large component of the student’s interview discussion, and she was successfully offered a place at Clare.

Oxford PPE

I assisted a student with PPE mock interviews. They were already strong in politics and philosophy, but were weaker in their understanding of and interest in economics. I focussed on texts at the intersection of these two fields (Hirschmann and Sen), showing him how economics was a fitting complement to the subjects he already studied. This helped motivate him to study more super-curricular economics reading and excel in the interview and secure a place to study PPE.

Hobbies

I love reading economic history books, which are a fascinating combination of economic theory and historical knowledge. Helps me motivate students with real world examples. Also value physical fitness, regularly go to the gym and rock-climbing. I very much believe that a healthy body is necessary for an active mind.

Testimonials

“I’ve been a student of Nick’s for three years, having completed my entire IB diploma with his help. Nick is very knowledgeable about a broad range of topics from mathematics to physics to economics, which has been extremely useful to me as those were my Higher Level classes. Unlike other tutors, Nick is able to seamlessly switch between all these different areas of expertise depending on whatever I needed help on for the day, and offered outstanding guidance not only for the examination portion of things, but also the structuring and organisation of research reports. The skills I have developed with him throughout the years will stick with me throughout my journey in university, and I was highly satisfied with the outcome of my final results thanks to him.”

IB Tuition

“Nicholas is very trustworthy and professional and will help you in any way he can. Previously, he helped me with HL IB economics. He was able to explain the complicated, such as the quota’s diagram, in a simple and clear manner. From his teaching, my score went from 5 to 7. Besides, he also taught me how to write logically and precisely. After attending his lessons, I was able to be shortlisted (top 0.5%) in the 2023 economics category of the John Locke Institute Essay Competition.”

IB Economics

“I recently had the pleasure of working with Nicholas as my interview mentor, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. Nicholas is simply amazing—his expertise and dedication transformed my preparation experience into something truly exceptional. From the very first session, it was evident that Nicholas is extremely well-qualified. He tailored his approach to fit my unique needs, meticulously analysing my strengths and areas for improvement. What truly sets Nicholas apart is his genuine commitment to his student’s success. He went above and beyond to ensure I was fully prepared, offering flexible scheduling as well. Encouragement and belief in my abilities gave me the boost I needed to excel. Thanks to Nicholas’s outstanding mentoring, I walked into my interview feeling well-prepared and self-assured. I am thrilled to say that I received an offer, and I know that Nicholas played a pivotal role in that success. If you are looking for an interview coach who is knowledgeable, supportive, and truly invested in your success, look no further than Nicholas. He is, without a doubt, the best coach you could ask for.”
