My approach to tutoring focuses on building my students’ confidence and giving them a strong foundational understanding of their topic before moving on to more challenging ideas. I create bespoke learning plans and materials for my students which integrate their personal learning goals, interests and preferred learning styles. Through class discussions and thought experiments, I support students in developing advanced critical thinking skills and learning beyond the syllabus.
I aid students in improving their exam technique and essay-writing skills by providing detailed guidance on the best ways to approach exam questions, including how to identify and interrogate key terms. I help students find revision techniques which work for them and simplify the essay-writing process by providing step-by-step explanations on how to create a logical structure and consistent line of argument. I provide resources to help students consolidate their knowledge outside of sessions and give personalised feedback on their work, including identifying specific areas for improvement and ways of achieving their learning goals. I also frequently feedback to parents and guardians on students’ work and their performance in the sessions.
GCSE/iGCSE, Revision Skills
I am tutoring F to help them develop revision and note-taking skills for their GCSE/iGCSE revision. F is a high achieving student who is very busy during term time. Although they are performing very well in school, F was unsure how to structure their independent revision and make clear notes. In our sessions, I demonstrated to F how they could use a wide range of revision and note-taking techniques, including mind maps, flashcards, audio recordings and story boards, to help them understand and memorise information. I also taught them how to effectively use past papers and create a revision timetable to fit around their busy schedule. F is now more confident independently revising for their exams and creating revision resources for a wide range of subjects.
A Level, Religious Studies (OCR)
I tutored A for two years to help them prepare for their Religious Studies A Level examination (OCR). Initially, A struggled with understanding and analysing complex concepts and was not confident voicing their opinions. In our sessions, I focused on breaking down concepts into easily understandable points and short explanations. I also encouraged A to voice their opinions and we developed a good rapport which allowed us to have constructive and detailed discussions about the course content. A’s confidence and work improved significantly throughout our sessions. They achieved high marks in their exams and were accepted into their top choice university.
A Level, Religious Studies (OCR)
I tutored B for two years to help them prepare for their Religious Studies A Level examination (OCR). B was a highly motivated student, but struggled with essay-writing and gaining marks for critical analysis (A02 marks). In our sessions, I focused on explaining in detail how best to approach essay questions, including how to identify and interrogate key terms. I also provided detailed guidance on how to structure critical exam-style essays and develop a clear line of argument. B’s essay-writing and critical analysis skills improved dramatically over the two years. They achieved high marks in their exams and were accepted into a top Russell Group university.
A Level, Religious Studies (AQA)
Since July, I have tutored E for their Religious Studies A Level examination (AQA). E wanted to do well in their exams, but received low grades in their mocks and was not finding the subject particularly interesting. In our sessions, I focused on making the content more engaging for E and achieved this by linking the course content to E’s interests and contemporary issues, including AI and social media. I also helped E improve their essays by explaining the marking criteria for their exams and providing detailed guidance on how to structure 10-, 15- and 25-mark essays. E continues to show great improvement in their religious studies work and has told me they find our sessions enjoyable and the subject more interesting.
A Level, Government and Politics (AQA)
I tutored D for one year to help them prepare for their Government and Politics A Level examination (AQA). D had recently been diagnosed with a condition that impacted how they studied and they had fallen behind on their class work. In our sessions, I supported D in creating a learning timetable to help them effectively manage their work and catch-up on missed learning. I also created bespoke session notes that included images and colours to help D engage with the material and stay focused throughout our sessions. By the end of the year, D had developed strong time management skills, had caught-up with their peers and was consistently staying on top of their class work.
University Application, Personal Statement
I supported C with writing their UCAS personal statement for their university application. C was applying for a highly competitive subject which they had not studied at school. They were unsure how to demonstrate their interest in the subject and structure their statement. I worked with C to create a university-level reading list which would broaden their understanding of the subject and demonstrate their interest in it. I also provided detailed guidance on the best way to plan and structure their personal statement, including how to write clear, concise sentences and integrate their extracurriculars. C’s application was successful and they were offered places at Russell Group universities, including their top choice.
Primary, English as an Additional Language
I helped G, a student based in Hong Kong, improve their English over several months. G had a high level of spoken English, but found writing exercises more challenging. G was initially hesitant to work independently and was worried about making mistakes. During our sessions, I encouraged G to be more confident and to try exercises before asking for further support. To build G’s confidence, I created writing activities which were fun and creative and reduced the pressure they felt to write ‘perfect’ answers. Over our sessions, G became more independent and completed exercises without extensive guidance.
I played squash competitively at university and still enjoy playing in my free time. I like being active and learning new skills from friends I have met through the sport. I also enjoy doing ceramics as it gives me a chance to be creative and gain practical skills and knowledge about creating 3D objects. I frequently visit art galleries for new ideas and to learn more about different artistic styles and materials.
