About Me

I am a qualified teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience. My subject specialisms are English, Maths and Science.

I think it is important to establish strong rapport and open communication with the children (and families) that I work with, I listen.  I work with short term goals, such as preparing for examinations, through to long term work, such as supporting a child with learning challenges or school anxiety. The environment that I create is one of unconditional positive regard whereby the child always feels acknowledged and safe to make mistakes and learn. I use Reggio, Montessori and Waldorf methods to support my teaching and have many creative resources in my tool box. I instil confidence and aim to ensure that children become independent with their skills for life-long learning. I want the children to achieve, to become confident and to learn.

My background as the Director/Principal of an outstanding primary school and being a mother of two children, aged 10 and 7, has enabled me to develop and evolve an authentic understanding of education, its challenges, pitfalls, demands and expectations. As a Family Life Coach, I am able to support all members of the family. Parents appreciate my vast experience of childhood and education and I am known for bringing peace into family life. Children adore working with me as I am safe, creative and make learning accessible. Children make excellent progress with me.

Recent tuition

I have worked with over 50 students in a 1-to-1 setting. I tutor a wide range of academic levels from pre-school through to GCSE. Please see below for a selection of my experience:

Reception  ESL Reading & Vocabulary Intervention and Homework Support

These Japanese twins newly arrived in the U.K without any English. They were provided with intensive and creative sessions in order to support the acquisition of language and communication skills in order to settle into preparatory school life both socially and academically. Following 6 months of twice weekly support, both twins were able to read, speak and write English in order to fully participate in school and be able to successfully communicate with their peers.

Reception & Year 1 ESL Reading & Vocabulary Intervention and Homework Support

5 year old, Matt, and 6 year old, Adele, were newly arrived in the U.K with very little English. They were provided with intensive and creative sessions in order to support the acquisition of language and communication skills in order to settle socially and academically into preparatory school life. Following 6 months of twice weekly support, both were able to read, speak and write English in order to fully participate in school and be able to successfully communicate with their peers. Ongoing weekly tutorials were provided to ensure that all learning objectives were being met and exceeded.

Year 1 Reading & Writing Intervention

John was identified by his preparatory school as needing extra support with his reading and writing. Throughout the year John was provided with 1-1 reading and writing support twice weekly. In these creative sessions, John learned techniques to aid his reading skills, resulting in a three-year progression of his reading age. He also learned how to answer comprehension questions succinctly and with inference.

Year 2 Dyslexic Tendencies, Reading/Spelling/Writing & Confidence

Margo was identified by her new preparatory school as needing to be assessed by an Educational Psychologist. Pre-assessment we worked together on her limiting beliefs that came as a result of feeling like she had “failed” in her previous school. As her self-esteem evolved, she relearnt the essential building blocks of reading, with specific focus on high frequency/sight words. Margo responded really well to visual/creative learning techniques so these were incorporated into writing short stories, illustrating and writing these stories became such a wonderful way for her to learn. Sessions with Margo continued as she transitioned into Dunhurst, Bedales School.

Year 1 Dyslexic & Dyspraxic Tendencies, Reading/Comprehension/Handwriting & Confidence

Amelia arrived at her new preparatory school with very low self-esteem and a complete lack of confidence in her abilities. We arranged for Occupational and Educational Psychology assessments. She had not been taught the essential building blocks of reading and was not able to produce clear, consistent handwriting. Together we worked on her self-confidence and established that she was a very good artist, especially good at modelling and sewing. Using these skills as evidence of ability, Amelia learnt how to transfer her concentration and focus to her reading and her fine motor skills to her handwriting. She now attends Dunhurst, Bedales School.

Year 3 English & Mathematics (SEN Dyslexia)

Shellie attends a preparatory school in Surrey that provides specialist teaching for dyslexic children. She attends tutorials throughout the holidays to maintain her learning levels in reading, writing and mathematics.

Year 4 Creative Writing & 11+ Exam Preparation (SEN Dyslexia)

Amy had an advanced reading age with an incredible vocabulary and verbal capacity. We worked on improving her ability to answer comprehension questions, with a specific focus on inferred meaning. We also worked on planning and organising her ideas so as to improve her creative writing. Amy attended weekly tutorials throughout Year 4 and then returned for 11+/Entrance examination support in Year 6. She was offered two scholarships.

Year 5 Handwriting, Comprehension & Creative Writing (SEN Dyslexia and Dyspraxia)

Eliza presented with an exceptionally high IQ, having recently been assessed by an Educational Psychologist. She was an exceptional mathematician yet struggled with her comprehension and creative writing; her handwriting also needed a lot of support. First, we corrected her posture and she was referred through to a paediatric chiropractor and OT. Using resources such as an angled writing board and an ergonomic chair, we focused on improving her ability to answer comprehension questions, with a specific focus on inferred meaning. We also worked on planning and organising her ideas so as to improve her creative writing. Eliza attended weekly tutorials throughout Year 5 and Year 6. She attended senior school on academic scholarship.

Year 4 to Year 6 Confidence, Self-Esteem & 11+ Entrance Examination

Samuel, aged 8, demonstrated a proclivity for drama and art and required support with his self-esteem due to limiting beliefs about his social skills. We used his ability to act, to role play through specific social situations with his peers whereby increasing his confidence to make friendships. We worked together on preparation for entrance examinations with a particular focus on the interview. Samuel was offered 3 art, drama and English combined scholarships.

Year 5 & Year 6 Entrance Examinations

Theodore, age 10, had just changed preparatory schools so that he could be provided with a greater creative and expressive arts education. Maintaining his academic level was of key importance so he attended weekly tutorials specifically for preparing him to take entrance examinations: emotionally and academically. Theo sat entrance examinations to three schools and was offered three academic scholarships. He attended Eagle House on scholarship and then went on to Wellington College.

Year 5 & Year 6  Academic Confidence

Lauren attended her local primary school yet had lost interest in her work. We worked on her self-esteem as she had been afraid to ask for help as she felt that she was the only one who struggled. Following two years of support, Lauren’s academic confidence evolved and she became fascinated by science. She went on to senior school, not requiring any intervention, successfully achieving A grades throughout and excelling in the sciences.

Year 5 & 6 Academic Confidence & Entrance Examinations

Tallulah was an incredibly bright and able student yet she lacked confidence in her abilities. We specifically worked on her self-esteem and tendency to hold back from group discussions in school. Over time, Tallulah, commented that she was feeling more able to take part in class discussions and this was also noticed by her teachers and parents. In preparation for sitting entrance examinations, Tallulah worked on her interview confidence. She was offered a place at her first choice school and is actively taking part in all group activities with confidence and enjoyment.

Year 6 English Language Support & Confidence.

11 year old Pauline attended weekly English tutorials in order to support grammar, spelling, speaking skills and written work. Alongside these academic tutorials we worked on her confidence and self-esteem. Within 12 months, she became far more confident, and her teachers commented on her overall progress in her written and spoken English. Ongoing weekly tutorials were provided for another 12 months until the family returned to France, where the student attended the International School. Her confidence and self-esteem continued to flourish and she graduated with honours.

GCSE English Examination Preparation & Coaching

Niamh attended coaching sessions throughout the holidays prior to sitting her GSCE’s. She wanted to focus on how to organise her studies, note-taking, and scheduling her time as well as focusing on the GCSE English Papers. Together we worked on techniques and strategies of good study skills. We went through the GCSE English curriculum alongside analysing text and preparing best responses for the short and long questions. Niamh now has the volition to get on with her studies with confidence in an organised and strategic manner.

IGCSE Examination Preparation, Coaching & Revision.

Oscar attended coaching sessions over the Christmas Holidays, throughout the mock GCSEs up until he sat the IGSCE examinations in May/June. He keenly awaits his results with confidence and the satisfaction that he revised, planned, and prepared to his absolute best ability.
