Matt

"I was really struggling with my English Lit A Level, until my dad set me up with Matt. He spent a lot of time getting to know me and what I enjoy before we looked at any books so we could work together which made him very different from a normal teacher. He was always trying to find the bits of the text that were interesting to me and I could relate to which made studying so much easier."

About Me

I have worked as a tutor since 2012. My subject specialisms include English, Philosophy, History, Classics and Social Sciences. I also support students through Oxbridge applications.

I am a generalist, which allows me to help students make wide ranging connections. I support them directly through continuous availability throughout the week, engaging homework assignments, and a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I am always an advocate for the student, never for the system.

My teaching tries to lead students towards big ideas (formalism, falsification, irony) through detailed study of a worked example. I try to provide thought provoking and unexpected materials, and to enable students to share the breadth of their own ideas.

Recent tuition

GCSE English

I helped Stephanie prepare for her upcoming exams by honing her close reading and comprehension skills. By working with texts that spoke to her interests, I was able to help her develop the tools she needed to succeed, and to better understand what the exam required of her. This helped her achieve a B, which was above her school’s prediction, and helped support her going on to further study.

A-Level Philosophy

Andrea and I worked together to prepare her for her philosophy exam by focusing on everyday applications of the core concepts she had been working with in class. By reframing the topics, addressing in more relatable terms, she was able to develop a more intuitive understanding of the topics. She was able to then achieve an A, which allowed her to meet her offer and go on to study at UCL.

BSc University Entrance

I worked intensively with Vincent over Skype, who was studying at Nanning No 2 School in China, to develop his critical thinking and English language skills to enable him to apply to universities in the UK. I guided him through key academic concepts and ideas, helped him improve his writing and public speaking skills, and collaborated with him to create a compelling university application. Vincent was invited for interview at Cambridge – a first for the school – and has been offered a place at Imperial to study Engineering.

BA University Entrance

I worked with Natasha on her UCAS application and her interview technique for her application to Oxford. As she was applying to study Chinese, our sessions focused on theory of language acquisition, and on developing an understanding of Chinese culture and ideas. We focused intensively on the interview format, which gave her the confidence to excel and achieve a place at St John’s College.

BA University Entrance

I worked with Tom on his application to read Classics and English at Oxford, focusing mainly on the assessment papers. We worked through a large set of past papers, identifying patterns and strategies for approaching them, as well as refining his UCAS form and interview technique. Our focus was on allowing Tom to show his passion for the connections between the subjects, which meant finding novel approaches to texts and ideas. Tom went on to achieve a First at Oxford, and is now studying for an MStud in Classics, which I also helped him prepare his application for.

PHD University Entrance

I worked with Claire on her application to Yale Graduate School to study French. Yale takes only a dozen applicants each year, so we focused on creating a strategy for her application that would appeal to the specific interests of the admissions board. This involved a deep investigation of publication histories, intellectual trends, and high-level academic ideas that ensured her application stood out from the crowd. We also focused on her interview preparation, ensuring that her presentation style would work well for a US audience with different expectations and norms. Claire received offers from Harvard, Yale, and Columbia, and is now in her fourth year of study, on secondment to the Sorbonne.

Hobbies and Interests

I am teaching myself classical economics. I also compete in two pub quizzes a week.

Testimonials

“I started working with Matt around a year before sending in my UCAS application. We spent hours talking about my interests and figuring out what courses would be best for me, even going to open days together. He really focuses on wide ranging discussions, giving me space to explore my ideas without worrying if I’m right or wrong about anything. As I figured out where I was going to apply, he became more exacting and sometimes more difficult – which was awkward sometimes! It really worked and I’ve kept in touch with Matt on and off for my whole time at Oxford – he’s been a great mentor to me and I wouldn’t have been as prepared as I was for uni without him.”

“I was really struggling with my English Lit A Level, until my dad set me up with Matt. He spent a lot of time getting to know me and what I enjoy before we looked at any books so we could work together which made him very different from a normal teacher. He was always trying to find the bits of the text that were interesting to me and I could relate to which made studying so much easier. He helped me to see how even plays from ages before I was born could still have things to say about today, which has really helped me to having a broader perspective. My teachers were really impressed even a few weeks of working with Matt by the new ideas we had worked on together, and I felt more confident expressing myself having talked through ideas with him. I like the way that Matt is down to earth and will approach things in an accessible way no matter how hard the ideas are.”

“Matt was an insane help to my business school application. It’s so unusual to find someone who has professional experience with big companies, has an MBA, and a good sense if what the latest trends in economics research are. Matt was great at interrogating my ideas, pushing back where I should be smarter, and forcing me to be more rigorous in my own work. Matt is a great mix of intense and chill person which helps me to work things through without feeling judged even when my ideas don’t make sense or might upset people. His help made a huge difference to my business school application – after working with him I felt like I could argue my side with almost anyone because he worked me so hard.”
