About Me

I have taught in the Early Years for over ten years and am passionate about children getting the best start to their reading and writing journey, in a fun and interactive way. For example, my Phase One activities concentrate on developing children’s speaking and listening skills, phonological awareness and oral blending and segmenting, thus paving the way for children to make a good start in reading and writing. I allow the children to express their ideas and feelings about their experiences using full sentences, including use of past, present, and future tenses and making use of conjunctions, with the correct modelling and support.

I am a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor. I specialise in providing compassionate, non-judgemental counselling to young adults and beyond.

Recent tuition

I have taught children in an infant school for more than ten years. Below are two examples of students I have recently tutored:

This student came into reception with little/no confidence and lacked self esteem. He found it hard to make friends and wasn’t able to contribute to whole class discussions. I worked with him on a 1:1 basis, building on his characteristics of effective learning and through my teaching techniques and continued encouragement and support he began thinking critically, developing his own ideas and started to make links and develop strategies for doing things with confidence. He left reception working in greater depth for maths and literacy as well as being a fabulous leader amongst his peers.

This student came into my class being non verbal. He would not sit or join in during lesson time and would struggle to express his feelings and emotions. I worked on a 1:1 basis with him beginning with many speech and language games such as barrier games to help communication, I made sure he had an IEP which was tailored around all his needs and included his parents in every decision we made, it was the work I did with his parents that had the greatest impact as what was implemented in my class was mirrored at home, our teacher/parent relationship was strong and fluid. He left reception being able to express his ideas and feelings about his experiences using full sentences.

Hobbies

I would describe myself as a bibliophile, a lover of books, in my precious spare time I am often asked to write reviews for new releases for various independent authors. Reading provides a calm experience coupled with escapism to another world just for as short while!
