About Me

My subject specialism is Biology. In addition I offer tuition for English, Maths and Science. I have been tutoring since 2016, working with a number of students at many different academic levels.

I have an organised approach where I make sure I gain a full understanding of the client’s needs and expectations and then tailor each tutorial. With GCSE or older pupils we generally have a discussion about the area they having problems with, following this we go over past paper questions to cement understanding. I provide full reports after each session to highlight the progress that is being made. I am positive, patient and enthusiastic about the subjects that I teach.

Recent tuition

Please see below for a snapshot of my recent tutoring experience.

Reception: Phonics & English

This girl was very ill during her nursery year so I tutored her at her hospital in order to get her familiar with concepts such as numbers, colours, shapes and phonics before starting Reception at Francis Holland. She successfully learnt the sounds of the alphabet and started blending sounds together when reading.

Year 1: Maths and English

This girl attends one of the Independent schools in London. She found the transition from Reception to Year 1 quite challenging and was shy of answering any Maths questions as she felt she did not understand what was being asked. After discussion with the parents we decided it was best to have a Singapore Style like Maths teaching strategy. In a few months her confidence was greatly increased and in her end of year tests she placed in the top 20% after being in the bottom end previously. My approach was to tailor the lessons so that they were fun and challenge her when she was ready so that her confidence increased.

Year 3: English

This girl is in Year 3 at Thomas’ Kensington and needed help improving her English in order to succeed in school entrance tests. We focused on grammar, creative writing and comprehension and in a matter of months she had gone up a level in her English performance at school. She gained confidence, now enjoys English and feels more confident in exams. She successfully passed her 8+ interview to attend her school of choice.

A-Level: Biology

This A level student was at Charterhouse School and was struggling with her A Level Biology. She was very uncomfortable with the concepts of A2 Biology and did not feel that it had been taught to her in a way she could understand. We covered all the material she wasn’t happy with and are worked on improving her grade from a C to a B (having already raised this from D to C) by practising effectively answering past paper questions. This has greatly helped her confidence as she had convinced herself she was not able to study a science subject.

A-Level: Biology

This A Level student is at Collingham College and she has to focus on her A level in Biology, as she could not sit it last year at Downe House due to illness. As a consequence of this illness she had to move from boarding school to Collingham. Due to switching schools she had to switch Biology exam boards from Edexcel to OCR so I focussed on recapping previous work that overlapped both exam boards and then bringing her up to speed with the new content of the OCR exam board. Her knowledge and confidence greatly improved as she could understand concepts that she covered last year. Focussing on answering exam questions effectively.

Undergraduate: Biomedical Science

This 2nd year Biomedical Sciences student is at Brunel University. She was surprised at the transition between school and university and was not prepared for the extent of independent learning required so therefore struggled. She requested help in covering concepts that she did not understand and in planning a piece of coursework for submission. After successful planning and explanations of topics she was weak on, she received a First for the coursework.

Hobbies and Interests

My main hobbies are skiing, running and baking.

Client Testimonials

“I am extremely happy about my daughter’s development since we started to work with Katya helping her with KS2 English. Unlike other tutors we came across, Katya is very structured and has demonstrated a genuine interest in my daughter. Very quickly Katya has managed to establish a positive relationship with my daughter. Katya sets up specific goals with the parents and then follows up with rigorous updates. Every week she brings thought through materials tailored to achieve the agreed goals. I can highly recommend her as a tutor.”
