About Me

My approach to tutoring is student centred, adaptable, and focused on building both understanding and confidence. I start by identifying each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style so I can tailor lessons to their individual needs. I use a mix of techniques including guided questioning, step by step problem solving, and visual explanations to make abstract concepts clear and relatable. I place strong emphasis on active learning by encouraging students to think aloud, tackle practice problems independently, and reflect on their reasoning. This helps them develop the critical thinking skills that lead to long-term understanding rather than short-term memorisation. I’m flexible in my methods and pace, adjusting lessons depending on the student’s goals, whether that’s improving exam performance, filling knowledge gaps, or developing a deeper interest in Maths and Physics. My sessions are structured but responsive, ensuring that every student feels supported, challenged, and motivated to achieve their best.

Recent tuition

Maths (age 8-13)

I have strong experience in engaging young students in their Maths learning, both in preparation for the competitive 11+ exams or simply to align them with age-appropriate curriculum expectations. Alongside tutoring Maths on a one-to-one basis to a Year 5 student, I have delivered holiday booster classes for young students in prime central London. Groups were typically for 3-4 students. At this age, several new mathematical concepts are introduced which can confuse young learners learners: fractions, decimals and ratio being common examples. I pride myself on clarifying these to ensure strong foundations for their future Maths endeavours, drawing on interactive elements to keep learning engaging and fun.

KS2 to KS3 Maths

I tutored this student over a nine month period to support her transition from KS2 to KS3 Maths. She was initially falling behind and struggling to keep up with the new curriculum. I provided targeted support to bridge gaps in understanding, reinforced key concepts, and introduced strategies to tackle more challenging topics. Through consistent guidance and practice, she began excelling in class and gained confidence in her mathematical abilities.

GCSE Physics

I tutored this student in GCSE Physics over a 1.5-month period. They were working at a grade 5 and aiming for a grade 6 but lacked confidence in exam technique. We focused on exam preparation and building confidence, with targeted practice on weaker topics and strategies for structuring answers effectively. Through consistent guidance and feedback, the student improved their problem-solving approach and achieved a grade 7.

GCSE Physics and Maths

I tutored this student over a nine month period in both GCSE Physics and Maths. They wanted to strengthen their understanding of concepts, improve exam technique, and learn effective revision strategies. In Maths, we focused on reducing careless errors and maintaining focus during exams, while in Physics we reviewed core concepts and tackled challenging questions. Through structured practice and guidance, the student achieved a 9 in Maths and an 8 in Physics, showing significant improvement and increased consistency in both subjects.

GCSE Physics

I tutored this student in GCSE Physics over a nine month period. They required comprehensive support across all topics, so we went through the entire syllabus, reteaching concepts and addressing gaps in understanding. We also focused on exam technique and applying knowledge to problem-solving questions. Through structured tutoring and regular practice, the student gained confidence and achieved a grade 8.

GCSE Maths

I provided tutoring to two under-16 football teams over a three month period in the lead up to their GCSE exams. The group included students of varying abilities, from foundation to higher tier. Sessions focused on exam preparation, with additional individual support on challenging concepts where needed. Almost all students passed on their first attempt, with only three needing to retake.

Physics GCSE

I tutored this student over a nine month period, providing full support in Physics and preparing her for end-of-year assessments. She was aiming to be selected for Triple Science rather than Double Science. We focused on revisiting key concepts, building confidence, and developing exam techniques. Through consistent guidance and practice, she secured selection for Triple Science, demonstrating both improved understanding and increased self-assurance.

A-Level Physics

I tutored this student in A-Level Physics over a nine month period. They were struggling with a grade 4 and lacked confidence in tackling exam questions. We focused on concept revision, building confidence, and exam preparation. I provided step-by-step guidance on problem-solving techniques and how to approach unfamiliar questions, which helped them develop independence and accuracy. By the end of our sessions, the student had made consistent progress and achieved a grade 6.

Hobbies

My main hobbies are climbing and calisthenics, as I find they challenge me both physically and mentally. Climbing develops problem-solving skills and technique, encouraging me to think analytically and find the most efficient approach to each challenge. Calisthenics has taught me patience and resilience, as progress often takes years of consistent effort. It’s helped me learn to embrace being a beginner and to keep improving even when progress feels slow. I also spend a lot of time reading, both to escape into imaginative worlds and to explore new ideas and subjects I might not encounter otherwise. These hobbies reflect the same curiosity, persistence, and analytical thinking that I bring to my studies and my tutoring.

Testimonials

“We contacted Jake quite last minute for some extra help with GCSE Physics, and he was absolutely brilliant. Over the course of a few weeks, he helped my son rebuild his understanding of key topics and, more importantly, his confidence. The online lessons were interactive and well-paced, and Jake managed to make even the trickier areas of the syllabus clear and approachable. His calm, encouraging style made a huge difference, and we noticed a real improvement in both exam technique and results in a very short time.”

GCSE Physics

“Jake has been an excellent tutor for my son, who is very bright but sometimes struggled to stay focused and could be quite disruptive in lessons. Jake handled this with patience and consistency, keeping sessions structured while still making them engaging and enjoyable. He had a great way of bringing the focus back to the work without causing frustration, which meant my son always made solid progress, even on days when his attention wandered. In Maths, Jake helped him refine his problem-solving skills and tackle topics he had previously overlooked, while in Physics he provided the clarity and support that helped everything start to click. We really appreciated how Jake managed to motivate him and guide him through the material effectively.”
