About Me

I have tutored students in schools, colleges, adult education and universities. I believe that all people are different and that, therefore all learners are different. Everyone has the potential to develop and flourish. My job as a tutor is to find the best way for you to understand and engage with the learning task and to provide academic and emotional support to inspire you with the confidence to succeed. I have helped many students in different subjects to prepare for examinations and for college and university entrance. I am well qualified with a Masters and a Doctorate in Education. I trained as a teacher at the University of Oxford. I have worked and volunteered outside of education; I am a qualified mediator and a listening volunteer for the Samaritans. I have written and published widely, including ‘Your Guide to Successful Postgraduate Study’ for Sage Books.

Recent tuition

My specialist subject is English Literature and English Language, I also teach Performing Arts, Media Studies, Education and Sociology. I help students applying to Oxbridge too, including personal statement and EPQ support.

A Level History (AQA)

I tutored this student during the year he was retaking his A levels. His confidence had been shaken by his poor results, due in part to Covid disruption. We met in person every two or three weeks. I gave him some confidence-building written tasks, to which he responded very positively. Gradually his confidence and academic writing improved. I supported him in his application for university, and he is now registered to study biochemistry at Manchester University.

A Level English Literature (AQA)

This bright student loved literature. However, her English coursework was stuck at GCSE level, lacking in insight, depth and her own ‘voice’. We deconstructed some texts off syllabus, and this seemed to unlock her passion for words and ideas. Over six months or so her writing improved tremendously and she achieved a fully deserved Grade A, going on to train as a teacher.

A Level Politics (Edexcel)

This student intended to study history at University. He needed to get two As and a B grade to get into his chosen university. Feeling that Politics was his weakest subject, he sought out some extra tutoring which I provided during the second year of his course. I was able to show him how to write evidence-based coherent answers to questions, to write succinctly and persuasively, and to put forward alternative possibilities, to show off his breadth of knowledge of the subject. He easily achieved an A* and eventually decided to switch to Politics at University.

A Level History, Geography and English (OCR)

This student wanted to be the first in his family to go to university. Having failed his eleven plus, he attended comprehensive school, where he worked hard but lacked confidence in his own abilities. The additional tutoring support I provided throughout his A Level course focused on building his confidence and helping him to structure and plan his A level essays. I taught him a technique of using mind maps to open up essay questions to make best use of his subject knowledge. His writing became more fluent, and he was able to gain a place at Lancaster to study History.

National Diploma, Media (Edexcel)

This student was a creative and highly skilled photographer whose academic writing had helped her back throughout her school career. Having chosen to study a ND in Media at college, she continued to struggle with written assignments. I was able to help her in our weekly tutorials in planning and structuring her work and in expressing her ideas on paper. Together we designed a work diary to give her practice in articulating her ideas and projects, a task that she found easier as it was closely related to the practical work she loved. She managed to achieve a Merit and went on to study Photography at Falmouth.

Postgraduate Student, PGCE

This student was a returner to education, having raised a family and not having the opportunity to go to university when she was younger. As her tutor, we met every two to three weeks. I was able to direct her reading and support her in academic writing. We began with smaller, manageable tasks, gradually building up to drafting chapters for her dissertation. I taught her to engage with the literature and to develop her own ‘voice’ gradually, so that she was reading critically and formulating and expressing her own ideas in her topic area. She achieved her post-graduate degree on schedule, and now teaches in higher education.

Hobbies & Interests

I am passionate about sports. I play tennis regularly and enjoy walking my dog and road cycling. I support a big London football team! I read contemporary fiction of many kinds. In the last few years, I have taken up the saxophone and was very proud to get my Grade Five. Cooking is another passion for me, especially French and Asian foods. I have travelled widely with my wife and family and we enjoy escaping to relax in our ‘maison secondaire’ in Brittany.

“Geoff supported me with my extended project qualification that I was working on during my A levels. Even without specific expertise in history, he was able to provide me with very useful feedback, suggestions, modifications, and amendments. He clearly marked suggestions for improvement and changes highlighted and explained with a note alongside. This layout was extremely useful as I could see where and what changes I needed to consider and could see how this affected my essay. Geoff helped me improve the quality of the academic writing within my essay teaching me important skills which I will use as I move into further education. Overall Geoff’s recommendations and improvements helped immensely with getting the grade I wanted and taught me some academic writing skills.”

A Level EPQ student

“Geoffrey guided me through the process of applying to my undergraduate degree. He read and critiqued my UCAS statement in order to improve it while giving me support on how I could mend my academic writing in order to better phrase my ideas. My dyslexia has stifled my confidence in writing essays and statements. However, Geoff continues to guide me on how to structure my ideas so that they come across on the page in a way that appears intentional, direct and succinct. He added useful comments to statements which enabled me to go through and make the suggested adjustments easily. Geoff helped me enormously throughout my undergraduate degree and even read through my lengthy dissertation.”

UCAS personal statement student

“Geoffrey was my PhD supervisor for a period of six years. During this time he provided me with outstanding support to articulate and shape my hypothesis to support my PhD proposal. Thereafter, he regularly supported me in formulating and writing my Thesis Chapters. The support provided during this period was critical to me in light of my lack of experience in academic writing and structuring a PhD Thesis. This support provided me with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve my academic writing. Furthermore, Geoffrey would regularly email me to encourage and support me to meet deadlines. He is extremely approachable, humble and takes the time to make you feel welcome and ensures you have clear direction to further improve your work. This support motivated me and ensured I successfully completed my PhD. Geoffrey has a wealth of academic experience in teaching and research in both Further and Higher Education which is unique and immensely supported me because he was able to engage with me due to his experience and skills set.”
