About Me

I have been working as a private tutor since 2013. My subject specialisms are English and Maths, I am also able to provide support for the 11+ Entrance Exams. I am a very experienced tutor with a background in Higher Education; I have a doctorate in English Literature and have taught undergraduate students. Having been home educated up the age of 16 has given me a unique perspective on education and has inspired me to be creative in my approaches to teaching. I enjoy tutoring at all levels and strive to build the confidence of my students by giving them a solid understanding of a subject and encouraging them to be independent in their learning.

My approach is to take the stress out of learning for my students. I create a safe environment that is high achieving where my pupils feel they can make mistakes and learn from them. I use a thorough, step by step approach, so that my students learn the fundamentals of a subject. I focus on teaching my students how to appreciate and enjoy a subject as much as exam technique and revision.

Recent tuition

I have over 150 hours of tutoring experience working with students from Key Stage 1 through to Undergraduate Level. I have provided some examples of my most recent tutoring experience

11+ Entrance Exam Preparation

Stephen was very talented in Maths but required some extra support for English. Stephen was applying for Highgate and City of London. With his logical mind we worked through the structure of his responses using the PEE technique to create clarity in his communication. Additionally, we worked through model answers and completed practice questions to develop his writing skills.

11+ Entrance Exam Preparation

Dylan found creative writing very difficult, so it was my job to help him work through longer responses to give clarity and depth to his answer. The focus of our sessions initially was to plan responses and develop his thoughts and ideas. Following this we looked at model answers and discussed the ‘ingredients’ that are used to achieve the top band. Dylan grew in confidence during our sessions.

11+ Entrance Exam Preparation

Rosa was a bright student and consistently performed above average for her age. She lacked confidence in her own ability and required support for both Maths and English. We met weekly to focus on various parts of the Entrance exam such as Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning. During our time together, we worked on planning structures for writing, spelling and building vocabulary lists. Each week we would write stories and complete layered comprehension tasks. Rosa was able to work more independently as time progressed.

GCSE English Literature (Edexcel)

David was a very bright student who was struggling to effectively respond to exam questions. Initially, in our weekly sessions, we went through an in-depth review of the specification ensuring David fully understood the Assessment Objectives. Following this we spent time pulling apart the exam questions, ensuring that he fully understood the demands of the questions. Finally, we looked at exemplar responses with examiners comments, this was really helpful in stretching and challenging David.

A-Level English Literature (Edexcel)

Sarah was a bright and capable student, but she was unsure how to plan and write an essay. We looked at the exam questions and spent much of our weekly sessions planning responses and developing different planning structures. This highlighted gaps in Sarah’s knowledge which we were able to fill, revising and reinforcing knowledge as we went along. By the end of our sessions Sarah has many tools that she could apply to the exam questions, ensuring her responses were well planned and clearly written.

Hobbies and Interests

I am also an academic, publishing research in the fields of gender theory and science fiction. I enjoy exploring how science fiction reflects society and speculates on future possibilities, particular when it comes to the position of women. This academic interest is also a hobby of mine and I am a big fan the novels of Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov and James Triptree Jr. I am a devoted Star Trek enthusiast and enjoy Opera and Classical music
