About Me

My specialist subjects as a private tutor are Maths, English/Literacy, Portuguese, Dance and Yoga.

As an experienced teacher, I have exceptional communication skills and use a positive and student-centred approach in order to give my students the opportunity to improve the confidence in their learning skills. I have enthusiasm for my subject areas and the ability to deliver information in a passionate way.

My main teaching qualification being Performing Arts – added to my large experience in teaching Yoga & Meditation and Dance to individuals within the Autism Spectrum – has only enhanced my tutoring experience in Maths, English and Foreign Languages.

As a Dance teacher and  Maths tutor, I have always felt very motivated to think out of the box while exploring the most effective teaching techniques for the different learning styles – specially the kinaesthetic – in order to provide a unique experience for every one of my students.

Recent tuition

Please find a selection of my recent tuition experience.

Brazilian Portuguese – I have been teaching in private tuitions and also in language schools, usually for adult learners and in 2015 I started teaching a student who owns a company where most of the employees are Portuguese or Brazilian. Although he started learning Portuguese language because he wanted to be able to communicate more efficiently with them, the lessons also became a very pleasant pastime after he developed confidence in his language skills. It’s been a pleasure to witness the student’s progress.

Girl starting Reception in 2015 – from July 2015 to January 2017, teaching English and Maths following the guidelines of Key Stage 1 SATs Learning Journey, at first preparing the student to start school and later keeping regular weekly lessons in order to maintain her progress.

Boy starting Reception in 2017 – during two months from July to September 2017, teaching English and Maths with emphasis on Phonics and also relaxation through Yoga, following the parents request, as it helped improving his concentration.

Maths – For more than a year now, I have been teaching a 12 years old student who needed help to improve his Maths results at school. Although he loves most of Maths’ topics and is very dedicated to his studies, he needed specialist support to improve his attention skills and confidence. After a year, having had weekly tuitions, he had significantly improved his results, which has helped him feel more confident and motivated and the parents are also very happy with his progress.

“It’s great to have finally found a Tutor that is enthusiastic about language and that has a great teaching method. I am really happy to be finally on my way to learning a second language.”

Alex, private Portuguese student since 2015

“Emilia is a fantastic teacher. She’s so knowledgable, has a brilliant style, is kind, patient and really helped me to progress with my Portuguese at my own pace. I would recommend her in a heartbeat”

Jonny, Portuguese student at Portuguese Global (Lingua Direta).

“Emilia is gentle and her calm demeanour influences whoever is around her. She used Hady’s favourite characters to get him started with phonics and even spelling. These activities helped improve Hady’s concentration level as well prepare him to start Reception. She’s in tune with the child’s needs and would change up activities whenever the need arised; whenever Hady lost concentration (which was surprisingly rarely) they would move through Dance or Yoga. Both Hady and I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to these sessions.”

Mira, mother of Hady (private student in August 2017, while he prepared to start Reception

“My daughter really enjoyed her sessions with Emilia, they had fun while they were learning!! Emilia seems very at ease with children and communicates with them brilliantly, her patience was remarkable. Emilia has ingenious ways of teaching such that isn’t boring and never makes it feel pressured – plenty of encouragement and praise are given! My daughter got to grips with phonics and key words that helped her in her way and without Emilia she would have struggled.”
