About Me

As an experienced and dedicated tutor, I ensure that I fulfil certain standards when I teach my pupils. Firstly, I curate all my sessions according to the needs and desires for the students and their parents. Secondly, I guarantee absolute excellent time-keeping and prudence, coupled with flexibility if, for some reason, the parent / carer wishes to change the time of the session. Thirdly, I balance direct examination preparation when needed with the cultivation of a fun and engaging atmosphere, filled with gamified activities. Finally, I am always aware of potential deficiencies in a pupil’s confidence and self-esteem, and often this rectifying this issue is the first step to success. I have great experience working on platforms such as Atom and Twinkl, as well as the websites of the exam boards across all age ranges.

Recent tuition

7+ Preparation

I am currently tutoring O, who attends Thomas’s Kensington, to prepare him for his 7+ exams to St Paul’s, Westminster and Latymer. We are focussing specifically on English and Maths, and I have particularly helped him when it comes to dealing with more complex arithmetic operations.

11+ Preparation

I am currently working with F, preparing her to undertake 11+ exams for Chigwell and Forest next year. So far, we have outlined specific problems, such as telling the time, long division, spelling and punctuation. Through gamification and explanation, her ability in these domains has already improved. She also struggles with her focus, which means I often divide the lessons up effectively, whilst keeping her engaged and interested.

11+ Preparation

I am currently working with A, having helped her achieve places at Christ College Grammar School and North London Grammar School last year. Her primary issue was a lack of exam technique and strategy and so I taught her a range of techniques to tackle complex problems, such as a “one-feature-at-a-time” approach of pattern recognition in non-verbal reasoning. She utilised – and still utilises – this skill independently and her results – and confidence – are proof of our joint efforts.

11+ Preparation

I am currently tutoring C, who will be sitting his 11+ in a couple years. He and his mother expressed keen interest in getting a head start, so I have begun by introducing him to the requirements of the 11+ process, as well as the techniques that he should implement to achieve success.

11+ Preparation

I am currently tutoring G, who is at Norfolk House, to prepare him for his 11+ exams in the next academic year. We are making sure he is competent in a range of areas, including structured creative writing, inferential reasoning in comprehension, factors and multiples in Maths, and general exam technique in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. I am extremely proud of the progress G has made, especially in Maths where he has gone from being one of the worst-performing students in his class to the best.

11+ Preparation

I am currently tutoring O to prepare her for her 11+ exams in the next academic year, where she is aiming to obtain a place at St Michael’s Grammar School. We are focussing primarily on her Maths, strengthening her skills in fractions, decimals and percentages, time intervals and graphs, and we have seen immense improvements across all domains. This was echoed in her glowing end-of-year-report.

11+ Preparation

I am currently tutoring C, who is in year 5 and will be sitting her 11+ next year. She hopes to go to Chigwell and Forest. We have focussed on introducing her to the four domains of the 11+ exam, and more recently, ordering and adding fractions, fractions of an amount, as well as time intervals and algebra. Again, across all topics, C has improved enormously and is now well-placed to sit her exams.

Year 5

I am currently tutoring Z, who is going into Year 5 at Arnold House. He is preparing for his 11+ exams next year, and so I am working through the maths syllabus with him, identifying any gaps in his knowledge or ability. For example, we have recently focussed on angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. He has begun to show strong familiarity with the requirements of the 11+, which will stand him in great stead next year.

Year 8

I am currently tutoring R, who is in year 8 at Highgate. His mum informed me that he had fallen behind on his Maths, Chemistry and Latin and was experiencing a lack of confidence as a result. We have been working to fill the gaps in his knowledge and restore his self-esteem. Both he and his mum are very pleased with the work he has done, and his teachers have acknowledged his sudden improvements in these subjects.

A Level Psychology

I tutored A-Level Psychology to A, who was in Year 12 at Haberdashers’. I primarily helped him prepare for his Psychology exams at the end of the academic year, working primarily on Approaches to Psychology and the conceptual difficulties of Behaviourism and Humanism. He far exceeded the expectations of his teachers and now has the predicted grade he desired.

A Level Philosophy

O came to me seeking help for his A-Level Philosophy exam. As well as the intellectual challenges he was facing, he had also missed a fair bit of time at school due to mental health issues. Thus, I had to attend to both elements, always maintaining a friendly and warm environment whilst ensuring that his academic level remained high. Despite his prior difficulties, O did extremely well and gained a far higher grade in Philosophy than had been predicted. We mainly focussed on ethics, epistemology and philosophy of mind – the latter he had found particularly confusing prior to my clarifications.

Oxford Application

I am currently tutoring O, who is at Marlborough and wishes to go to Oxford to study Italian and Linguistics. We have worked particularly hard on composing an essay for Trinity College, Cambridge’s Linguistics Prize. This centred on the ethics of large language models in a sociolinguistic context. It has been a pleasure to watch O develop his skills and confidence when it comes to tackling complex, university-level questions and topics.

Adult Learner, Italian

I tutored R in Italian since he hoped to develop an ability in the language for his frequent trips there. We focussed on the fundamental elements of grammar, especially Romance grammar, so that R has a firm understanding of the basics. This included the difference between the lexical categories, as well as gender and number inflectional marking. He grew significantly in confidence when it came to translating and understanding Italian.

Hobbies

I am the captain of a 7-aside football team that plays every Monday. This is one of my cherished activities, since I relish the opportunity to lead but also offload certain skilful requirements to other plays. Football presents the perfect space to be an individual but within a broader structure of mutually dependent players. I also weight lift – for mental and physical reasons of catharsis. I play chess, which I take to be an accurate enactment of the tradeoffs between flexibility and principled structure and therefore incredibly useful in broader life.

Testimonials

Mother of 11+ student

“I am very pleased with Darius. He has a wide range of knowledge which works perfectly for my daughter as she will face entrance exam and she needs to prepare in more than one subject. I like his passion for Italian literature as I study this myself in my school years. My daughter is very happy when he comes home and looking forward for his lesson which I attended at first and I was able to understand a few things myself…. Thank you.”

Mother of Italian Literature student
