Full-time private academic tutor and LSE Prize Winner – highest overall score on the Accounting & Finance BSc programme.
My specialist subjects are Mathematics, Economics and Business Studies which I typically teach up to IB or A-Level, although I can these teach at higher levels upon request. I have also supported many pupils with their entrance exams, UCAS applications and University interview preparation.
I graduated from The London School of Economics top of my degree class, having achieved the highest overall score on the Accounting & Finance BSc programme. I studied a range of disciplines including Finance, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics and Statistics. I scored exceptionally high marks in all of these exams, and have a genuine passion and interest in these subjects.
I have excelled academically, and am keen to pass on my methods/techniques of studying to other students to help them realise their highest potential. I believe learning should not be simply confined to the arbitrary boundaries set in the curriculum. The most effective learning, and development of knowledge comes from studying beyond these, in order to obtain a varied and wide-ranged understanding of a subject. This helps a student master the subject and to perform well in classwork, homework and exams.
I believe that each student needs to be tutored in a unique way suitable to them, and as such take an innovative approach with each student.
I am an experienced tutor with over 5000 hours of private tutoring experience, having worked with students up to Master’s level. I have helped pupils secure entrance into the UK’s leading public schools and universities, and have helped many pupils achieve grades A/A* in their GCSE and A-Level examinations. My previous tuition has been a mixture of home-schooling placements, regular evening tuition and short-term intensive placements prior to examinations. Highlights include:
A2 Economics and Mathematics
I tutored a pupil extensively during his sixth-form application process and A-Levels, helping him score an average of 98% in his AS levels and to obtain A2 grades of A*A*A. In addition, academic tuition, I also provided personal statement and interview support. He successfully received an offer from Christ’s College Cambridge to study Economics as well as offers from LSE and UCL.
AS & A2 Level Economics
I have been holding regular sessions for an 18-year-old pupil for his A Level economics who is currently enrolled at one of the top public schools in the United Kingdom. He is already a top performing student in class, but the tuition is to develop his knowledge beyond the syllabus so that he can be prepared for starting his Economics studies at Oxford University.
AS & A2 Level Economics
I worked with a pupil from Westminster who was struggling with her Economics classwork and who had fallen behind the rest of her class. Having not studied Economics or similar subjects before she found many of the basic concepts quite strange and difficult to grasp. By focusing on key foundational concepts and gradually building upon these I managed to drastically improve her understanding of the subject and also her class/homework performance.
Second Year Undergraduate Student
I have been regularly supporting a Cass Business School pupil throughout her first year at university. She had particular difficulties with financial statement analysis and marketing, so our tuition has mainly focused on these core topics and I was delighted to help her achieve a first class mark during her first and second year examinations.
Third Year Undergraduate Business
Throughout the Spring, I supported a third year university student with her International Business dissertation, which focused on the international launch of a new consumer goods platform. The work was tough and demanding but the student received a first class mark and ranked amongst the top 10% of students in her year for the piece.
iGCSE Mathematics and Economics
I was previously tutoring a 15-year-old girl for iGCSE Mathematics and Economics in preparation for her for the summer exams. The tuition extended beyond the school syllabus in order to ensure she was adequately prepared for the exams and scored exceptional marks. I had drawn upon my experience of these subjects from my university studies to help her develop an in-depth and rigorous understanding of the subjects.
I have been regularly tutoring an IB Standard Level student who was struggling to remember the vast amount of different topics in the syllabus. He had particular problems with Calculus and Algebra, so our tuition has mainly focused on these two core topics to ensure he is adequately prepared for the forthcoming examinations. The tutoring work with this student continues at present, and I am pleased to see a continual improvement in his work and for him to actually start enjoying studying Mathematics!
GCSE/16+ Mathematics and Economics
I was previously tutoring a 15 year old girl for GCSE Mathematics and Economics in preparation for her Westminster entrance exams in November 2014. The tuition extended beyond the school syllabus in order to ensure she was adequately prepared for the exams and scored exceptional marks. I had drawn upon my experience of these subjects from my university studies to help her develop an in-depth and rigorous understanding of the subjects.
16+ Entrance Exams Mathematics and Economics
During the 2013/14 I tutored my younger brother extensively during his application process for the leading schools in London including Westminster, St Paul’s, Harrow and many others. He was successful in receiving multiple offers, and achieved a 90% mark in one of the economics entrance exams. I continued to offer him support during his A-Levels now, and he has gone on to read Economics at Cambridge.
I have recently started to participate in a home-schooling Mathematics placement for a 16 year old boy. Despite no longer being at school his parents are still eager for him to perform well in the upcoming examinations and so my tuition focuses on intensive revision of the various topics in the syllabus. There has also been a large focus on practising past examination paper questions and ensuring he is able to answer these quickly and accurately without making mistakes.
During the summer of 2016 I held a number of tutoring sessions with a year 10 student to bring him back in-line with his school peers for Mathematics. He had performed poorly during his end of year mock exams and his parents felt his motivation for studying had dropped. As such, our lessons focused on teaching him the material in a clear and easily understood way, and also doing this in an enjoyable way to make him enthusiastic about maths. The tuition continues at present, and the student seems to be making excellent progress and is much better motivated for this subject.
AS Level Economics
I completed a short term residential placement with a pupil where I spent a weekend at the family home intensively tutoring the pupil on her AS Level Economics. After performing poorly in her AS Levels, her parents wanted her to get fully comfortable with the material before she commenced her next year at boarding school. We spent a number of hours each day revising the syllabus and ensuring she fully understood each topic, so that she would be better prepared for her upcoming A2 Economics studies at school. I have since kept in touch with the family, and they tell me she is now performing much better at school, and is much more confident with Economics.
International Baccalaureate Economics
I provided intensive week-long Economics tuition to an upper sixth-form student during her half term holidays from school. We primarily focused on revising material she had previously learnt, and on studying next term’s topics to ensure she would remain an exceptional performer in school. I also helped her cover additional material beyond the curriculum to further develop her understanding of the subject and to better prepare her for her university studies.
AS Level Business Studies
I had numerous tuition sessions with a 17 year old boy for his AS Level Business Studies, providing additional support to that which he was receiving at boarding school. We focused on his areas of weakness, as he wanted additional support on these topics to ensure he could continue to perform well at school in the highly competitive classroom environment. There was a particular focus on the case study exam questions which the student initially felt very apprehensive about, but towards the end of our sessions felt fully comfortable answering these fully independently.
Sixth Form Entrance Interview Preparation
I spent some time with a pupil applying to study Mathematics, Economics, Business and Physics at sixth-form. We discussed interview technique and how to best present yourself during an interview at a great length and covered how he could best demonstrate his interest in these subjects during the interview. We also worked on how to solve ‘brainteaser’ questions during the interviews.
Cambridge Economics Interview Preparation
I spent a large number of hours with a sixth form pupil, helping him to prepare for his Economics interview at Cambridge University. We spent time preparing in a number of ways, from revising the A-level material, to discussing interview technique and how to stand out as a first-rate candidate. We also held a number of mock interviews and practised answering the classic unfamiliar and advanced theoretical questions common at Oxbridge interviews.
Personal Statement Support – Economics
During autumn 2016 I completed a number of sessions with a student who applied to study Economics at University. We spent the time writing, structuring and reviewing her personal statement to ensure it displayed sufficient enthusiasm for the subject and an element of uniqueness to make sure it stood out. I was pleased to see her secure an offer to her first choice course at Cambridge as well as LSE and UCL.
Personal Statement Support – LSE Masters in Finance
I spent many hours working intensively with an overseas student wishing to apply for the Finance Masters programme at LSE. The student was having particular difficulty with discussing their academic interests and how they would further these during their study, and also demonstrating that they were the right candidate for this course. We spent time addressing these issues as well as ensuring the entire statement was clear, concise and engaging.
Hobbies and Interests
I am involved in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and have a varied range of interests outside of private tutoring.
“Thank you very much for helping at short notice with Mauro’s tutoring. He thought you were brilliant and a genius.”
“Darius, thank you so much for all the help and support you offered me this week! You’ve been amazing and were a great tutor to have. I definitely feel much more confident with maths now after all the help you’ve given me”
