I have been working as a tutor since 2014. My main subject specialism is English as a foreign language, and I also teach both English and maths to GCSE.
I like to keep things as contemporary as possible, and I often use videos and recent news articles to form a basis for discussion, expansion of vocabulary and literary techniques.
One of my strongest qualities is the relaxed atmosphere that I create: I strive for an environment where students are not scared to make mistakes. I think mistakes are great, as they give us a chance to reflect, analyse, and progress.
I give positive feedback when it is due, and reinforce this with a reward system where age-appropriate. I’m committed to tailoring a session to a student’s particular needs. I have an obsession with quality (towards everything in life), and I see the difference in a session that has been well prepared and delivered.

GCSE English Language
Alysha had narrowly failed her GCSE English language exam. We worked together to improve her ability to pick details out of texts, her grammar, and how to build ideas in a piece of writing. Her fluency in writing has improved greatly and she was able to achieve the desired grades to attend Aspire2Be Academy.
I worked with Reece to help him with his GCSE maths examination. Having only failed by a few marks on the previous exam, we focused on Trigonometry, algebra, area, and long division, amongst other things. We also looked in detail at exam technique, remaining calm under pressure and prioritising time management. On passing the examination, Reece was accepted onto the sports programme of his choice at Blue Coat Sixth Form.
Irene had moved from China to Spain and wanted to improve as many aspects of her English as possible in a short time. We started working on her vocabulary and pronunciation, and used news articles, magazines and videos as the basis for discussion. Irene can now formulate and argue a point, using a much wider range of vocabulary. She is currently preparing to speak in front of an audience at a conference based around UX design. We continue to work together for 2-3 hours a week.
Itsaso had applied to study a masters in child Psychology and needed to gain a TOEFL certificate in order to be accepted onto the course. We worked specifically on the writing, listening and speaking aspects of the TOEFL exam specification for a period of 5 months, and Itsaso received a high pass on her first attempt.
Dmitrii runs a medical equipment distribution company, and wanted to improve his English to better communicate with suppliers and potential clients. We work together 3 times a week on fluency in discussion, sales-based techniques, and general business English, often taking a video or business article as a basis for discussion.
Hobbies and Interests
I am a big fan of almost all sports. I coach football for 15-20 hours a week to a number of different age groups and levels. I run a business in South Korea with some friends aimed at helping players and coaches to learn English through football and physical activity.
I’m also a big fan of surfing and motorcycling – and use these as excuses to travel and discover different cultures and languages. I speak 4 languages, and believe this has really helped me gain an in depth understanding of the places I have travelled to and lived in.
