I have worked as a private tutor since 2015, and specialise in tutoring English and History.
My philosophy when tutoring is primarily to grow my students’ confidence, and to help them develop a real love for the topics that we study. I have a relaxed style and I respond to each student/lesson individually. I try to push all of my students, and also encourage a lot of independent study – sometimes in class in the form of writing under timed conditions, sometimes as projects for homework (schoolwork permitting).
I think my greatest strength is that students find me approachable. I’ve found that all of my students have felt able to open up to me about stress and worries which makes our working relationship a lot better – they know that I want to support them. I’m also very enthusiastic, and good at showing students that reading outside of a topic need not be boring or strenuous – I like to show them resources they can use to really broaden their interest in their work.
I have over 150 hours of tutoring experience from Key Stage 2 through to A Level. Please find a selection of my recent tuition experience below.
Year 6 – Year 9 English and History Homework Help
I have tutored Viktor once a week since he was in Year 6 (he is now finishing Year 9). Viktor is an incredibly smart boy, however he comes from a home where English is his third language (his father speaks to him in Swedish, his mother in Greek and his nanny in Turkish) – therefore, he was having trouble with English. In the years that I taught him, I helped Viktor with many things, but I am really proud of how he has developed his debating skills, both verbal and written. Viktor has very strong opinions, and would often forget there was another side to an argument. He has become very good at looking at all sides of a situation and developing a well-reasoned argument.
Key Stage 3 English and History
I taught Edwina once a week and ad hoc during Year 7 and 8. I was hired by Edwina’s mum to help her with English and History. Edwina was a very confident student, but struggled with spelling and vocabulary. She also expressed a strong dislike of English as a subject. We did a lot of work on creative writing, but I felt we weren’t making as much progress as I would like. After realising how much Edwina lit up when we talked about History, I realised this could be a way in. We then focused her creative writing around topics we were studying in History, and I saw Edwina’s work really improve. Her school reports showed her grades increasing steadily over the two academic years we worked together.
GCSE English and History (Edexcel)
I taught Edward once a week for two hours in the academic year up to his GCSE English and History exams. Edward was very shy, and extremely nervous about expressing his opinions, especially in writing. Edward really grew in confidence in our sessions, and even said that he was going to take English as an A Level, which made me so happy with his personal progress! His school reports, shown to me by his mum, also commented on how Edward was more confident and spoke up more in class.
IGCSE English Language
I taught Maddy once or twice a week for an hour and a half for a year. Maddy expressed that she needed help getting her ideas out eloquently; she had loads of really great ideas, but wasn’t very confident in organising them. In the year that I taught Maddy, she really blossomed, and went from listening to me talk in lessons to really getting involved, excitedly jumping in with her ideas. Her written work also got a lot stronger. I look forward to hearing her exam results this August!
IGCSE English Language
I taught Hugo once a week for an hour and a half for a year. Hugo was intensely shy when we met. He could barely look at me in the classes, and didn’t really get involved. Clearly, Hugo needed help with confidence as well as English Language skills. My tactic with Hugo was to help him with his transactional writing by choosing topics, at first, that he was really interested in, and therefore confident in talking about. This worked really well, and Hugo produced some really wonderful creative writing about sailing and skiing. He then felt much better placed to talk about other subjects. I look forward to hearing his exam results in August.
A Level History
I worked with Irene and Valcina in a group class a number of years ago. They both wanted help with their History coursework (Cold War) as well as crash course revision classes (primarily on the revision and exam techniques, as well as the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union) in the run up to their exams. Both gained the grades they wanted, got into the universities they wanted and have now graduated with Law degrees!
I have also worked with various students for short periods of time during half term residentials, working on coursework editing and exam techniques.
Hobbies and Interests
Outside of tutoring I like to visit galleries, museums and exhibitions regularly: I have an insatiable curiosity! I also like going to food markets – I’m vegetarian, and like expanding my knowledge of other cuisines (and just eating in general!) I also exercise, primarily boxing and yoga. I find these two activities not only help me to stay fit, but both help me keep a clear head in different ways.
“Caitlin tutored my older daughter in A Level History. She helped my daughter achieve her desired results and my daughter is presently in University studying Law.
We were very happy with Caitlin and asked for her assistance with my son in 2016.
Caitlin gave my son GCSE lessons in English, English Literature and History. He benefited immensely from Caitlin’s expertise and good teaching skills and is presently in year 12. Being the good tutor that she is, Caitlin identified the individual needs of each of my children and addressed them accordingly and this gave them both the desired results.

“Caitlin tutored both my children (16 year old twins) for a year coming up to their GCSEs. She built strong relationships with both of them and they responded to her positive, calm and encouraging style. She was professional at all times and reliable, always turning up to appointments on time and being flexible if our arrangements needed to change. She has a detailed and thorough knowledge of her subject and gives excellent advice on studying and exam technique – I have no hesitation in recommending Catlin as a tutor.” Susan
