Alex HM

"My son found Alex to be very patient, encouraging and says that he had a very effective method of teaching translations. I found Alex to be punctual, easy to communicate with and completely professional in all aspects required of him. I have no hesitation in recommending Alex to families requiring Latin and Greek tutoring to all levels from beginner to university standard at the highest level."

About Me

I’m all about engagement and connection in hope of drawing out what is already there (from the Latin route ‘educere’). This requires initially trying to see the world from their point of view. I will invite a student to embody their learning when possible – as I’m a certified embodiment coach – which certainly helps with the inevitable rote learning that the Classics require. That said, it is also vital to meet the student where they are at and adapt according. As a mentor I had a client for whom making eye contact was a major achievement. On first meeting, I try to assume nothing despite any external indications of health and wealth.

Recent tuition

Latin GCSE, British section, French Lycée, London since 2008

Teaching a two year course from scratch and with only two lessons a week, I’ve rarely had a pupil receive less than the very top grade at GCSE, with the majority achieving 100% in at least one paper.

Eton entrance scholarship

I tutored A in the two months before his scholarship taking him from a level 2 CE level to scholarship (hard GCSE/AS level) with 1 lesson a week. He achieved an A+ in Latin and a top Kings Scholarship.

GCSE and A Level Latin and Greek

I home-schooled D before his GCSEs. I home-schooled him for three years in all his Classics exams and tutored him through his successful application to Oxford. After excelling there and a D phil at Cambridge he has taken up various teaching positions throughout Oxbridge and most recently at Kings, London. He is now a Classics fellow at Downing, Cambridge.

GCSE Latin

K was achieving Cs and Ds in Latin at Westminster School. He relied entirely on vocab and knew next to no grammar: after 9 weeks of hard work at one lesson a week he took the exam and got a high 9.

Classics examination and interview, Cambridge

A applied this year to read Classics at Cambridge. Her state school does not offer Classics so she would be starting from scratch. She is bright and introverted and was lacking confidence in her own merit and in any likelihood of being accepted. After a month or so of careful work she took the exam and interview and was delighted, as I am, that Sidney Sussex offered her a place next year.

Hobbies and Interests

I read a lot, specifically at the moment around my trainings in Integral Somatic Psychology and Shadow Work.

Testimonials

“Alex has been an excellent Latin and Greek tutor to all three of my boys at varying stages. Initially at prep school he helped them with the subjects at scholarship level for Eton. One of my sons developed an interest in studying Latin and Greek at university level and so he helped him at A level and finally with the preparation for the rigorous Oxford exam. I am very happy to report that my son will be going up to Oxford this term to read Classics! My son found Alex to be very patient, encouraging and says that Alex had a very effective method of teaching translations. I found Alex to be punctual, easy to communicate with and completely professional in all aspects required of him. I have no hesitation in recommending Alex to families requiring Latin and Greek tutoring to all levels from beginner to university standard at the highest level.”

“Alex tutored my daughter for her Latin GCSE. We discovered in Year 11 that her teacher was not teaching properly and all the students in the class were going to have to drop the full course and only take half a GCSE. Ivy was very keen to try and and complete the full exam and so we hired Alex. He found her woefully unprepared in November but with two hours a week for six months he taught her brilliantly and we are delighted that she was just awarded an A-star. He is incredibly dedicated, arranging online lessons for holidays, and assigning homework every week. He taught the Latin properly so that she understood the grammar and the set texts, instead of just relying on memorisation. And not only is Alex extremely strong in teaching but he also was great at keeping Ivy calm and inspired through a very challenging six months. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”

“It is no understatement to say that my three years of home schooling – GCSEs and A levels – in Latin and Greek has dictated the course of my life thus far: I completed an MA and Classical DPhil at Oxford University, became an academic, and after several years of research fellowships throughout Oxbridge and Kings, London, I am now a Fellow at Cambridge. It goes without saying that my tutor Alex was a thoroughly knowledgeable, inspirational, and likeable guide who with great skill (and occasional patience) created the perfect environment for me to fall in with love the subjects and excel.”
