Private Tutors for Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia affects around 6% of the United Kingdom’s population. Simply Learning Tuition provides one-to-one support through a team of highly experienced tutors, mentors, and SpLD qualified practitioners. With our support your child will strengthen their learning abilities and develop greater self-confidence in their education.

For parents of a child with a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) such as dyscalculia, navigating the educational journey can be particularly daunting. Keeping up with peers, managing relationships with school and indeed choosing the right school in the first place become more complex. However, with the correct support, your child’s strengths and talents can truly shine and their full potential be unlocked.

What is Dyscalculia?

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) defines dyscalculia as ‘a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers which can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics’. Studies into the causes of dyscalculia are about 30 years behind research into dyslexia, causing a disparity between the understanding and public recognition of the two conditions. The most obvious indicator of dyscalculia is a clear discrepancy between your child’s ability in mathematics and their other subjects. Whilst many students experience general maths learning difficulties, students with dyscalculia experience these to a much higher and more consistent degree.

Common Signs of Dyscalculia

The characteristics of dyscalculia emerge from a very early age, and are often picked up on when children begin to learn maths in school.

– Poor information retrieval

– Inability to explain their approach/method

– ‘Immature’ strategies: e.g., counting on fingers

– Slow processing

– Over-reliance on rote learning (even if they don’t understand what they are doing)

– Trouble with number sense, e.g., ability to tell the time, or calculating exact change

– High levels of maths anxiety

– Not understanding place value

What are the key challenges faced by students with dyscalculia?

Students with dyscalculia primarily tend to struggle with number sense. As this is typically an innate skill, their self-esteem is often affected. This is heightened by the common misconception that dyscalculia signifies low intelligence or learning ability. It does not. It can be disheartening for the child when they fall behind their peers and in their classwork: especially if they are proficient in other subjects. Dyscalculic children may perceive their SpLD as an alienating factor, and fall into negative attitudes and disengagement in class.

Dyscalculia can also heighten maths anxiety. Steve Chinn is a pioneer teacher and researcher in the field of dyscalculia and mathematical learning difficulties. He asserts that ‘one of the key contributors to [maths anxiety] is the fear of being wrong, the fear of negative evaluation.’ Studies have shown that those with specific learning difficulties such as dyscalculia are more likely to experience poor mental health, including feelings of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. There are many resources available, however, and even ones tailored towards those with Specific Learning Difficulties, such as Place2Be. Please remember there is always someone to listen.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does dyscalculia affect academic performance?

Dyscalculia has a significant impact on a child's academic performance because of the nature of how mathematics is taught. With each year of school, the complexity increases, and the language becomes more sophisticated. No longer is it ‘adding’ and ‘subtracting’, but ‘trigonometry’ and ‘algebra’ etc. This constant progression is abnormally difficult for dyscalculics to keep up with. Maths is taught in school through procedures and with little contextual explanation. If early maths concepts have not been fully understood by the child, they will find it significantly harder to keep up with their peers as they progress.
Often, students with dyscalculia do not understand what they are doing in maths, or lack the self-confidence to use different methods to solve the problem at hand. Without the correct support and intervention, this will certainly have an impact on their later learning. To this end, Simply Learning Tuition introduces tutors for dyscalculia, mentors, and other approaches to help initiate this support and intervention.

  • What do students with dyscalculia find difficult?

    - Sequencing and recognising patterns
    - Short-term, long-term and working memory
    - Counting backwards
    - Mathematical language and word problems
    - Remembering 'basic' facts
    - Estimating timeframes

  • Characteristics of Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is, first and foremost, a lack of ability in maths, which often leads to Maths Anxiety. Your child may be doing very well in their other subjects and yet be inordinately struggling at mathematics. This discrepancy can often indicate a specific learning difficulty such as dyscalculia.
Outside school, it may be exponentially difficult for a dyslexic child to perform seemingly menial tasks, such as to read clocks and tell the time. Your child may not be able to remember any phone numbers, or postcodes. Furthermore, their frustrations may be aggravated by games which require keeping track of scores, or counting and number strategies. Moreover, dyscalculia complicates money matters for older children and young adults. Calculating change, managing bills, splitting a bill and calculating the gratuity, for example, are all made more difficult. These are areas upon which tutors and mentors for dyscalculia can work.

  • What is the difference between dyscalculia and maths anxiety?

The two are separate, but often co-occur. Dyscalculia is first and foremost the lack of maths ability. From this, it can cause Maths Anxiety. Maths Anxiety starts with mental and emotional difficulties, which then have an impact on the child's ability. The Dyscalculia Network presents some of the indicators of Maths Anxiety: 'Disorganisation, helplessness, apprehension, tension and in some cases, sheer panic can happen when they are faced with maths problems.'
Steve Chinn is a pioneer teacher and researcher in the field of dyscalculia and mathematical learning difficulties. He asserts that ‘one of the key contributors to [maths anxiety] is the fear of being wrong, the fear of negative evaluation.’ Tutors for students with dyscalculia can help manage their anxiety by guiding them through maths in an approachable manner, without pressure. Maths Anxiety is one of the contributing factors, but it is not the same as dyscalculia. Maths anxiety is debilitating and, when the two co-occur, heightens dyscalculics' inability to perform maths problems.

  • How can parents help their children with dyscalculia?

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) has extensive advice for parents, covering areas such as choosing a tutor, areas of numeracy and assessments. Tips include using tangible materials such as Cuisenaire rods, dice patterns, and Dienes apparatus. If needed, private tutors can create engaging and academically rigorous sessions for your child. The BDA highly recommends using a private tutor to help your child, both in their education, and in their wellbeing:

"A tutor is able to give individual attention and can set the pace of learning to suit your child. They can focus on the subjects that your child finds particularly difficult and will be able to identify your child's learning style, and therefore work to their strengths. Working with a tutor can also help to build a child's self-confidence."

Ultimately, people with specific learning difficulties benefit from a safe, non-judgemental environment such as one-to-one mentoring and tutoring provides. A private tutor is invaluable in shouldering the pressures of academic support and allowing you to spend more quality time with your child. Mentors and tutors also help your child to develop their confidence and self-esteem. Your child's confidence in their own learning abilities is fundamental to their ability to succeed. Tutors for dyscalculia are therefore highly recommended for parents to help their children.

  • Is a private tutor helpful for children with dyscalculia?

Put simply, yes! Dyscalculia disrupts a student's ability to do maths, but they are still able to make progress with the right support. This is where a subject-specific maths tutor is invaluable. New concepts are constantly introduced in Mathematics, and so having ongoing support from a Maths tutor provides a consistent point of support for your child.
Tutors can dive into different areas of maths and dissect them for your child to understand, reaching beyond traditional school methods. For example, a multi-sensory, structured approach is widely recognised as a beneficial way for dyscalculics to learn. Private tutors for dyscalculia will help your child understand maths concepts from different angles, helping them to overcome their struggles. As Simply Learning Tuition’s SpLD expert Victoria Gallagher asserts, tutoring 'tailors the education to the individual need'. Your tutor can help your child manage their maths difficulties in the way that best suits them.

  • Are dyscalculia and dyslexia linked? Does one cause the other?

Dyscalculia and dyslexia can occur alongside each other. Around 60% of people with dyslexia also have difficulties with maths. However, one does not cause the other. Certain difficulties such as the prevalence of poor working memory do apply to both dyslexia and dyscalculia. Additionally, dyslexic people may have added difficulties with word problems in maths.
Yet, this again does not necessarily signify dyscalculia.
