Founded over 1,111 years ago, Wells Cathedral School is a family-orientated, co-educational boarding and day school for 2-18 year olds. The school provides an all-round education alongside world-class Specialist Music and Chorister training. The school’s mission is to inspire every individual pupil to nurture their talents in a vibrant, creative, spiritual and stimulating environment to become a responsible global citizen. Perfectly located in the heart of the medieval City of Wells, in the beautiful surroundings of Somerset, the school offers a great balance between rural and city life with easy access to Bristol Airport, and Bath and Castle Cary train stations (with direct train links to London).

Wellbeing & Pastoral Care

We take pastoral care incredibly seriously, in fact, it lies at the heart of everything we do, due to our confident belief that safe, well and happy children are flourishing and successful children. We believe that wellbeing, mental health and safeguarding are the absolute foundations of pupil experience and the bedrock necessary to thrive in all other aspects of their school lives and beyond.

To make sure that all of our pupils are thriving, we have a Staff Welfare Team who meet every week to discuss pupils of concern and how to support them. We also think it’s vital to have a student voice, so we have whole school council with representatives from every year group and chaired by our Welfare Captains from our Upper Sixth pupils. Lists of ideas and suggested initiatives are taken to the SMT and the minutes/actions are shared with all staff and pupils termly.

We have a huge range of ‘Wellbeing’ activities, including: Mind, Body, Voice, which is now part of the curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9; a Weekly Mindfulness Programme for Year 10 and above; a Weekly Wellbeing Tracker as part of our PSHE programme; Wellbeing Wednesdays, which focus on a particular area around wellbeing with ideas, activities and discussion points; a Wellbeing Hub, which is a series of online resources packed with tips, which can be accessed by pupils, parents and members of staff; a series of Visiting Speakers addressing topics such as sexual consent, equality and diversity, and parenting advice.

Our commitment to supporting our pupils is also reflected in the training of staff as ‘Mental Health Champions’ via the MHFA, YouthMHFA, work with local mental health charity Headspace and also the newly appointed position of Mental Health Lead for the School from 2022.

Advice For Parents

We encourage parents to visit our School on one of our Open Days to meet current pupils, teachers and the Headmaster. If this isn't possible, please contact our admissions department for a personal tour of the School. We recommend contacting us at least one year in advance as we do have waiting lists.
