The American School in London, or ASL, was founded in 1951 by Stephen L. Eckhard. The American journalist and former teacher started the school with only 13 pupils, which now boasts upwards of 1400 students. ASL is a co-educational, independent day school for children aged 4-18 years old.

The Lower School encompasses K1-Grade 4 (Nursery to Year 5). Inspired by the Reggio Emilia and Project Approach frameworks, The American School in London’s Kindergarten program is exempt from Ofsted’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements, in line with their belief that ‘playful inquiry is the foundation for intellectual, physical, and social and emotional growth’. There is an Early Childhood Garden and a Creative Arts Studio where children can express themselves through art and play, listen to stories and explore drama, music, Spanish and movement.

The American School in London stresses independence and organisation during Lower School; the transitional years between childhood and adolescence. The curriculum consists of major courses in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, World Languages, Science, Physical Education, Music and the Arts. Students partake in many elective courses spanning technology, visual and performing arts, along with community service for meaningful exploration of self and community, and the pursuit of their own interests.

High School comprises Grades 9-12 (Years 10-13 in the UK System) and steadily emphasises core academic areas (e.g. Maths, English, Science) in preparation for American college – where the majority of students choose to progress. There are a multitude of Advanced Placement (AP) Courses available for senior students, and an Office for Student Advising.

Facilities at The American School in London include the Aquatic & Fitness Centre, the Make, Innovate, Learn Lab (MILL), Mellon Library and the Lower School Library, and the 450 seat School Centre for Education and the Arts. ASL also makes use of 21 acres at Canons Park for sports such as baseball, rugby, softball and soccer, alongside a Boathouse owned by the University of London Boat Club, from whom the school rents boat racking space for their own 32 boats and associated professional equipment.
