This unique and happy school is located in an old Victorian school building near Kensington Olympia. The classrooms are extremely spacious with large windows and onsite there is a gym, hall and pretty, cloistered, outside playground. The junior school is co-ed from 3-11. Their nursery, which opened in September 2019 is housed within a bright open-plan space with double height ceiling and an adventure playground. The nursery, like the rest of the school, benefits from the Forest school provision in Marcus Garvey Park. Reception and Year 1 also attend Forest School weekly throughout the year and the school has two staff trained as forest leaders. This is one of the special things that St James offers but what sets the school apart is the caring and supportive atmosphere that you notice as soon as you set foot through the door. While other schools recognise the importance of mental health and mindfulness in its pupils, St James’s has gone that extra step and integrated it into the school day. For 5 minutes before assembly every morning and for 5 minutes after lunch the children will meditate, in the younger years there are regular pauses or times of quiet through the day to promote an appreciation of mindfulness. The school also offers a nutritious vegetarian diet. A well-being coach is also employed by the school. There are lots of extracurricular opportunities to choose from, an array of trips and there are also coordinated activities. Academic performance is strong, with a particularly high standard of written work both in terms of content and accuracy. There are weekly sessions in the school library and a fantastic drama department, with all children involved in at least one performance a year. 70% of children take instrumental lessons and all children have a period of sport every day (gym, dance, swimming of ball skills). At 11+ many (around 57%0) of boys and girls continue to the senior schools (St James Boys and St James Girls) and others go onto City of London, Francis Holland, Kew House, Latymer Upper, Notting Hill and Ealing, Wetherby, West London Free School, Westminster Cathedral Choir School
