Often (and affectionately) referred to as Teddies, St Edward’s Oxford is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 13-18. Teddies sits on 100 acres in the north of Oxford, achieving a rare inner-City proximity for a boarding school. Admission to Teddies has become increasingly more competitive; in part because, for Sixth Form students, Teddies offers both the International Baccalaureate (IB) and A-Level qualifications. It is an academically selective school. Full and partial bursaries are offered, and there are several scholarships awarded, ‘encouraging participation and excellence’ across the school.

Sports offered at Teddies include sailing, rowing, golf and football – to name a few – with sports fields, a John-Pawson designed pavilion and a school Boathouse on the bank of the Thames. The facilities for music and the arts are equally impressive – the Olivier auditorium, for example, which seats 1000 people, and the North Wall Arts Centre, which runs as a charity; shared by Teddies with professional theatre, dance, comedy and music.

‘Community is everything at Teddies’, and this can be seen by their boarding school status. Day students are well integrated within the school, with allocated rooms in each house. Teddies also offers weekly and full boarding, allowing flexibility for parents and students – and which can make the transition between prep school and boarding school easier. There are 13 Houses for both boarding and day pupils; 5 for girls, 4 for boys, and 4 that are coeducational. Of St Edward’s school demographic, boarding students comprise around 84%, whilst day students attain 16%.

Top UK universities for Teddies leavers in recent years have been Bristol, Edinburgh, Durham, Manchester, Newcastle, Exeter and London (King’s College, UCL and Imperial). There is a strong wave towards US and other overseas universities, however, and the school certainly encourages students to pursue their individual aspirations, with their support.
