Shrewsbury is a co-educational day and boarding school for children aged 3-18. It comprises 12 boarding houses in total from September 2023; 7 boys’ houses, and 5 girls’ houses (thanks to the new addition of Queen Elizabeth Hall). Each boarding house is run by a Housemaster/Housemistress, with a resident Matron, an Assistant Headmaster/mistress, and 8+ House Tutors. The school caters predominantly for boarding students, though day students are welcome and integrated fully into the life and community of Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury School was founded by Royal Charter in 1552, during the reign of Edward VI. The historic nature of the school, however, beautifully merges with the addition of new, contemporary facilities such as the Barnes Theatre – opened in 2022 by Sir Michael Palin.

Shrewsbury is notable for its performing arts, with over ten shows produced annually. Equally, if not more, important to the School is their Sporting life. There are over 120 sports teams, and over 400 Inter-House sports matches per year. There are 108 academic classrooms, 1000 seats in their Performing Arts Venues, and 68 dedicated sports facilities. Extracurriculars range from Combined Cadet Force (CCF) to Creative Arts & Media.

Many scholarships are available for Shrewsbury students upon entering Third Form (13+), and Sixth Form (16+). There is a dedicated ‘Futures Department’ for students throughout term-time, providing resources, advice and guidance for life after secondary education, largely through connecting students with alumni, or ‘Old Salopians’. There is extensive provision for pupils with SEND, with each given an individual learning plan, and receive one-to-one or small group tuition alongside the standard curriculum.
