Sevenoaks Prep School, otherwise known as ‘The Prep’, is an independent day school for children aged 2-13. It was formed by Mr Geoffrey Garrod in 1918 as an initiative to teach younger boys at Sevenoaks School. The three main entry points are Nursery, Reception and Year 7 — though places may occasionally be available in other year groups.

The Prep has a Nursery (age 2-3) and Kindergarten (age 3-4). Nursery pupils follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which is continued in Kindergarten with the addition of some literacy, numeracy, art and design, and understanding of the world. Children in Early Years have an online journal, which is uploaded each session so parents can be involved with their children’s education.

Their academic curriculum follows on from the EYFS to the national curriculum. The Prep utilises a continuous assessment approach to familiarise KS1 & KS2 pupils with assessments, and ‘to inform teaching and learning’. Pre-Prep co-curricular activities include Ballet, Bell-Ringing and Playball among many others.

Specialist teachers are introduced increasingly each year as pupils progress through the school – by age 11, all subjects are taught by specialist teachers. In the Prep years at The Prep, pupils are taught in small class sizes, and as the school asserts, ‘whilst due regard is paid to the National Curriculum, our children are taught to the highest standard achievable by the individual.’ Leavers destinations include Bede’s, Caterham, and Tonbridge.
