Paint Pots Montessori was launched in 1988 in Bayswater by the founder Georgina Hood, who is a very well-respected figure within the Early Years Education world, namely for her knowledge, experience and passion for the Montessori style. She opened the doors to their new Hyde Park Nursery in 2014, and it has gone on from strength to strength ever since. Georgina Hood comments that there is often a calm and orderly atmosphere within their classrooms, despite a lot of activity going on, as children are totally focused on the task in hand. All the staff are Montessori trained and have a special interest / uniqueness to them, for example, yoga, photography or art, which they bring to the nursery. The nursery is spacious with direct access to their own enclosed large outdoor space where the children can play freely with equipment (such as scooters, different sized balls and hula-hoops) and gardening activities. The children have the opportunity to go out every day and during the summer season often a large proportion of the day is outside. True to the Montessori style they have a, ‘free work-cycle’ during the sessions where the children can choose which activities they would like to work with for as long as they would like to. Paint Pots Hyde Park has an area of woodland used exclusively for Forest School. This concept is when children freely explore the natural environment whilst the teachers look closely and document the children’s questions, comments and discoveries. The Forest School ethos is embedded within the curriculum and is not something that is tagged on to the learning experience. In addition to promoting free play, the nursery offers structured group activities such as art, cooking, music & movement and show & tell on a daily or weekly basis. Outings are arranged at least twice a term such as visits to local places such as the park or supermarket as well as to places further afield such as the National Gallery, Science Museum or the London Wetlands Centre. There is also the option to learn French (at an additional cost). Once the children reach the age of 3, they have the choice to stay for the full day at Paint Pots Hyde Park. The children bring in packed lunches and are involved in preparing the tables and washing up the crockery afterwards.
