Oakham School, Chapel Close, Market Place, Oakham, Rutland has been around since 1584 when it was founded by Archdeacon Robert Johnston. It is an independent co-educational school which provides boarding and day facilities for about 1,000 pupils with a 10 to 18 year old age range. There are 160  staff to guide them on their way to GCSE, A levels and the International Baccalaureate(IB). It has 16 day and boarding houses. 50 % of the pupils are boarders, 20 % come from abroad (Birmingham airport is an hour’s drive away).

Oakham welcomes academically ambitious children but emphasises the development of the person as a whole. “What makes a person is what matters most”. It supports its pupils through sport, arts, drama and music with over 30 different sports available with rugby and hockey given pride of place. Over 50 % of pupils play an instrument.  Pupils are encouraged  to enjoy life as it happens rather than focussing on the end point of leaving school.
