Mander Portman Woodward School
90-92 Queen's Gate, London, SW7 5AB
Head: Steve Boyes
Mander Portman Woodward School (MPW) The school is explicitly exam-oriented, and is tailored towards fifth-and sixth-form education, with over 45 subjects available for GCSEs and A-Levels. They maintain small class-sizes of no more than 10 students per class, allowing for greater individual attention from the teacher. Each student has their own director of studies, who is the main point of contact for the parents; they understand their student’s strengths and weaknesses, help them manage their workload, and assist in other aspects of daily life. The school environment is centred around treating the students as adults – students and teachers refer to each other by their first names and there is no uniform.
All of the tutors are all highly qualified to first/doctoral level, and many are A-Level or GCSE examiners, or even textbook authors for their respective subjects. All subjects at every level necessitate monthly revision tests to increase the pupils’ exam abilities and self-confidence under test conditions. Mander Portman Woodward School offers the widest range of A-Level provision in the UK, offering one year courses, two year courses, full year retake courses and short retakes courses. Students therefore are offered greater opportunities to progress in their education, and to improve upon past results. With MPW’s emphasis on exam techniques and practice, it is certainly an academic alternative to traditional schools. 48% of the A-Level Class of 2022 received Grades A*/A, and 74% for Grades A*-B. Russell Group destinations for the 2022 Leavers include Oxford, Durham, Edinburgh, King’s College London (KCL) and Nottingham. Whilst there are no bursaries offered, Mander Portman Woodward School does offer scholarships; around 20 a year, following rigorous exams.
The facilities at Mander Portman Woodward School include fully equipped media studios, computing and film rooms, art studios and five custom laboratories. With a newly remodelled drama room into a modern performance space, three libraries, and a healthy array of modern technology throughout the school, Mander Portman Woodman School certainly provides many tools to bolster students’ enjoyment and opportunities to learn. Art is a particular strength of the school, and the UAL (University of the Arts London) Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is also offered, allowing students to progress to a variety of top creative arts schools and universities including UAL.
