Harrow School was founded in 1572, under a Royal Charter granted by Elizabeth I. It is a full-boarding, all-boys independent school, for students aged 12-19.

Harrow School is one of the most renowned educational establishments in the United Kingdom, and indeed in the world. Harrow asserts their mission as ‘to prepare boys with diverse backgrounds and interests for a life of learning, leadership, service and personal fulfilment’. Of the ‘Old Harrovians’, notable modern alumni include Benedict Cumberbatch, Maro Itoje and Julian Metcalfe OBE. More historic alumni of Harrow include Winston Churchill, Sir Robert Peel, and Lord Byron, among many other impressive and influential men.

This historic establishment comprises a grand 324 acres, situated in Middlesex, north-west London. Notable features of Harrow School’s site include a working farm, an observatory, and a registered park. The extensive grounds grant similarly extensive opportunities to the 800+ boys who attend the school. Harrow is notable for its contemporary adherence to historical school traditions. For example, the unique lingo: ‘Beaks’ (teachers), ‘Divisions’ (classes) and ‘Shells’ (first year students, or new boys).

Sports facilities at Harrow School include 16 winter-sports pitches, 12 tennis courts, nine cricket pitches, two all-weather synthetic pitches, a nine-hole golf course, a fishing lake, a swimming pool, a sports centre and more. The performing arts are also a notable feature of the school; the Ryan Theatre seats approximately 300 people, and is equipped to industry standards. There is a team of six creative, technical and administrative professionals, in addition to drama teachers. For Music, Harrow facilitates the use of two major pipe organs, two grand pianos, and two recording studios, among other musical instruments and facilities.

Harrow comprises around 830 boys, split between 12 boarding houses. Each house consists of a House Master, Assistant House Master, Matron, House Tutors and House Visitor to support the 60-70 boys. Pastoral care at Harrow is well accommodated for, with support comprising (alongside the House Teams) the Chaplaincy, the 24/7 Medical Centre, a full-time Psychologist, a full-time counsellor and a proactive Pastoral Support Committee (which includes three members of the School’s Senior Management Team).

Academically, the school is certainly strong. Harrovian leavers have progressed to six of the world’s top ten universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford and Chicago. Admissions to Harrow School necessitate registration in Y5 or Y6, and successful completion of the ISEB Common Pre-Test. After which, applicants are invited to sit the Harrow Test at the School in the autumn term of Year 7. You can read more about Harrow’s rigorous admissions process here.
