Fettes College is an independent co-educational school for children from ages 13 to 18. It has just short of 600 pupils of which about 75 % come from the UK and 25% from abroad. It is located in a beautiful building on a hundred acre wooded campus near central Edinburgh with Fettes Prep School nearby. Fettes College was founded in 1870 by Sir William Fettes, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who lost his son and heir and devoted his wealth to setting up the college for “the maintenance, education and outfit of young people.” It prepares pupils for GCSE, A Levels and IB. One student said that not only was she taught the necessary subject matter but also the techniques of learning that carried her through University and beyond. About two thirds of its students are boarders. Its head, Helen Harrison, believes that this school should be a special place for its students, giving them the best possible opportunities for living, learning and development. It is a kind school where everyone benefits from a happy background and a strong sense of purpose.
It has a strong sporting ethos with excellent resources.
