Dunottar School is an independent, coeducational day school for students aged 11-18. Dunottar’s motto is ‘Do ut Des’, which translates to ‘I give that thou may’st give’. The school is renowned for their pastoral care, and aims to nurture in its students the seven behaviours of ‘warrior learners’; aspiration, creativity, curiosity, tenacity, independence, collaboration and inclusivity.

The school was founded as a girls’ school in 1926 by Jessie Elliot-Pyle, and was named for the Scottish Castle where King Charles chose to safe-house the Crown Jewels of Scotland. The school relocated in 1933 to the current location, an 1867 Grade II listed mansion formerly known as the High Trees Estate, comprising 15 acres of land. Under United Learning’s ownership in 2014, the school became co-educational, and dramatic school-enhancing projects were undertaken: the Sixth Form Centre built in 2019, which includes a cafe and recreational and communal areas, as well as the Castle Performing Arts Centre, which was built in 2021 and includes a 500-seat theatre, Drama and Music facilities.

There is a wide variety of co-curricular activities on offer for Dunottar pupils, spanning interests from Chess to Coding, Lego Robotics to Lacrosse, or Sewing to SCUBA Club. Over 95% of pupils are involved in competitive sports within the school. Two of the main sports are Rugby for boys and Netball for girls, as well as Cricket and Football, both of which are offered to both boys and girls. Onsite, Dunottar has an indoor, four-lane 25m swimming pool, three floodlit outdoor courts and one court within the sports hall for netball and tennis, and further makes use of local clubs for their facilities.

For their Sixth Formers, Dunottar offers, alongside the 3 A Level subject options, additional qualifications of either an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a Sports Leadership qualification, the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness or the Accreditation in Languages for Business. Following school, Bath, Exeter and Portsmouth are popular university destinations for Dunottar leavers.
