Notable Academic Facilities

Around the school, you can find various spaces set aside for purposes beyond the classroom. We have a popular library, a versatile school hall, and a dedicated space for our Special Educational Needs team. Most recently, we have added a superb ICT Suite, equipped with an impressive array of Apple Mac computers and associated technology. Our Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 classes all make use of this facility with their teachers, while our older children receive specialist lessons using their 1-2-1 devices.

We also have a versatile creative studio used for dedicated sessions in art, providing an inspiring setting for students to explore their creativity. Additionally, this space is used for science lessons where children investigate the natural world, offering ample opportunities for enquiry outside the traditional classroom setting. With a solid foundation in science, students begin to develop their understanding of fair testing and learn how to plan their own investigations.

Wellbeing & Pastoral Care

A fundamental element of our wellbeing offering involves maintaining a strong sense of community among our staff and pupils, fostering a true sense of family. Our school community is closely knit, where everyone, including parents, pupils, and staff, are familiar with one another.

As part of our wellbeing offering we follow the Jigsaw programme of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Emotional). This curriculum includes weekly lessons that cover topics such as emotions, behaviours, and health.

We have a part-time counsellor and have two teachers trained in the Drawing and Talking Programme to support pupils with emotional and social challenges.

Our daily emotional check-ins allow children to register their feelings upon entering the classroom, ensuring immediate support if needed. Worry boxes placed throughout the school offer a confidential outlet for pupils to express their concerns.

Advice For Parents

The main point of entry to Charterhouse Square School is at three years old. Children must turn three before 1st September of their admission year. Children may be registered from birth to 30th April of the year preceding their admission year.

Places for Nursery are randomly selected by an online generator. Registered siblings automatically receive a place, provided their brother or sister attends Charterhouse Square School in their first term of entry. The ballot process only applies for places in Nursery.

Leavers' Destinations

Our pupils leave us well-prepared for the next stage of their educational journey, with many securing places at some of the most prestigious schools in the capital, often winning scholarships and exhibitions. Leavers' destinations include Queen's College, City of London, City of London School for Girls, Highgate, South Hampstead High, St Mary Magdalene Academy, Alleyn's and Wetherby.

Sports

We prioritise physical activity as a vital part of our pupils' growth and development. With access to Charterhouse Square Garden and nearby sports facilities, our pupils engage in at least four hours of sporting activities each week – up to three times more than many state primaries.

From Year 2 onwards, all of our children enjoy a weekly swimming session at Ironmonger Row Baths, a short walk away from the school. They will also take a short coach trip to enjoy the fantastic astroturf facilities at Coram’s Fields.

In addition, our girls and boys receive training from experienced and qualified coaches. They have access to a wide range of sports including football, hockey, netball, tag rugby, athletics, cricket, rounders, swimming and tennis, as well as exercise sessions in PE and aerobics.

Art

All our pupils benefit from weekly art lessons, which are taught by either specialist staff or their class teachers. Our Creative Studio opens up a world of possibilities for pupils to explore various artistic mediums, including clay, papier mâché, pastels, charcoal, glass/silk painting.

Our Art Club is highly popular among our pupils, offering them the chance to develop skills like sewing or observational drawing.

We believe in providing our pupils with exposure to the rich world of art beyond the classroom. They have the opportunity to visit local galleries such as The National Gallery and The Tate, where they can appreciate and draw inspiration from some of the world's most remarkable collections of paintings.

Drama

Our pupils benefit from weekly drama lessons taught by specialist staff. Each year, all classes participate in a school production, providing pupils with opportunities to boost their confidence while engaging in theatrical experiences.

Throughout the year, we also host various external companies at our school to enhance our pupils' theatrical experiences and ignite their imaginations. These include the Little Angel Puppet Theatre and OperaEd, who provide them with an immersive experience in the world of opera.

Our Upper House host the prestigious Premier Performance in the stunning St Giles’ Church, Cripplegate. This event allows our pupils to showcase their talents, including singing, recitation, or playing musical instruments of their choice.

Music

Our pupils benefit from weekly music lessons taught by specialist staff. These dedicated sessions allow pupils to explore their artistic abilities and develop their creative skills. We offer private music lessons in a variety of instruments, including Flute, Clarinet, Recorder, Piano, Saxophone and Singing.

In Early Years, our pupils have the wonderful opportunity to attend London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concerts, which allows them to explore the world of music and performance.
