Caterham School is the 2023 TES Independent Senior School of the Year

Caterham School is an independent coeducational school for students aged 11-18, situated in Caterham, Surrey. It was founded as a boys’ school in 1811 by the Reverend John Townsend and became fully coeducational in 1995.

The school boasts an impressive 200 acre campus, with a striking dichotomy between the traditional elegant Victorian architecture and the contemporary facilities. Such facilities include  a Sports Centre with an indoor pool, a dedicated digital Innovation Centre, and a new Performing Arts Centre (with theatre). Sports facilities at Caterham School include a multimillion Pavilion, swimming pool, multiple netball courts and a sports hall. Music is popular at the school, and fostered by opportunities such as a recording studio, and MAD Live – a showcase of Music and Dance. There are numerous Drama opportunities such as upper and lower school productions, House Drama performances and the Orchard Theatre Festival, set in Caterham’s own outdoor theatre. Co-curriculars range from Combined Cadet Force (CCF) to Textiles and Fashion Club.

There are three Boarding Houses in total; Beech Hanger (Girls), Townsend (Junior Boys) and Viney (Senior Boys). The School offers both weekly and full boarding; at weekends there are no lessons, but sports fixtures on a Saturday and regular local excursions to the theatre, shops and other attractions in London and the South East. There is a SENCo alongside learning support staff, and accommodations made as needed throughout the school for SEN students. Additionally, there is a Health Centre for physical and emotional health and wellbeing, and a Study Buddy initiative alongside the School Council and Digital Council.

‘Learning how to learn is a key facet of a Caterham education.’ Indeed the school focuses on how to improve pupils’ methods of learning, encouraging students to risk and embrace failure to achieve success. The school is notable for its modernity, being an ‘Apple Distinguished School’. Students make use of iPads, and an EDGE curriculum (Explore, Develop, Grow, Evolve), which pushes them to consider topics such as metacognition and problem solving. Leavers progress to prestigious universities including Durham, Bristol, Newcastle and Oxbridge.
