Named as United Kingdom School of the Decade by the Sunday Times in 2020, Brighton College is a co-educational independent school, offering both full and weekly boarding. The school was founded in 1845, and occupies 12 acres of land close to the seafront in Brighton. The most recent ISI report (2021) asserted that the ‘pupils’ achievements, academic and co-curricular, are outstanding in their breadth and ambition’.

Brighton College maintains ‘a rolling programme of interior design with student involvement’ to ensure the familial and comforting atmosphere of the boarding houses. There are six boarding houses in total; 3 for boys, and 2 for girls. Alexander House is the exception, catering for both boys and girls in the Sixth Form. As Brighton College’s Boarding Inspection Report asserts, ‘the strong community spirit in the houses provides a bedrock of support and encouragement for the pupils to succeed in all they do’. Evening activities to enrich the pupils lives in the boarding houses include baking, board games and badminton.

The facilities at Brighton College are certainly laudable, with world-renowned architects OMA having designed the new School of Science and Sport, which opened in January 2020. The School contains 18 university-standard laboratories, break out spaces for research, a 25 metre pool, and a rooftop running track amongst other impressive inclusions. Many of the buildings at Brighton College have won RIBA awards, such as the Music School and Sarah Abraham Recital Hall, the Skidelsky Building in which the Design & Technology department is housed, and the most recent Girls’ boarding house, New House.

Brighton College is notable for its academic excellence, consistently achieving some of the top results for schools in the country. Around 20% of the College’s leavers are offered places at Oxford or Cambridge each year, and top destinations include Edinburgh, Bristol, LSE, Exeter, UCL and Durham.
