Bedales School is an independent day and boarding school for children aged 3-18. Bedales is situated upon 120 acres of South Downs National Park in Petersfield, Hampshire. It was founded by John Haden Badley in 1893 – a contemporary of Montessori and Steiner – as an alternative educational mode to the authoritarian Victorian practices of that time. Bedales as a whole, comprises Bedales Nursery & Pre-prep, Dunannie, for children aged 3-8, Bedales Prep, Dunhurst, for children aged 8-13, and Bedales Senior School for 13-18 year olds.

Bedales is similar to schools such as Eton and Harrow in maintaining their individual traditions, and in having their own distinct lingo. For example: ‘Jaw’, a ‘Brekkie’, ‘BACs’ and the ‘Blocks’ are common terminology to the Bedales community. The BACs, or Bedales Assessed Courses, are the school’s bespoke alternative to traditional GCSEs, alongside a core IGCSE programme of Maths, English, Sciences and Modern Languages. Bedales have a distinct department for ‘Outdoor Work’, in which pupils from Block 3 (Year 9) upwards, engage in community work on the school’s own farmlands. For example, students can enjoy ‘planting trees, beekeeping, hedge-laying, timber framing, wood whittling, making chutneys and jams, weaving and spinning wool, and working with our livestock’.

Approximately two-thirds of the senior school are boarders (predominantly from London and the South East). Bedales comprises three boarding houses: Steephurst, for girls in Years 9-12; Boys’ Flat, for boys in Years 9-12; and 6.2 Flat, a co-educational house for pupils in Year 13, with separate sleeping areas and bathrooms. Until sixth form, Bedales is academically non-selective. Leavers progress most often to Bristol, Sussex, Edinburgh and Manchester, though some also achieve Oxbridge admissions.
