Common Entrance Science Tuition
Physics, Biology and Chemistry are a key part of the common entrance paper and parents often ask us to introduce a single tutor to guide their son or daughter through their Independent Schools Examination Board (ISEB) common entrance curriculum. Many tutors who are science generalists can do this, but in some cases we may instead recommend one tutor for each of physics, biology and chemistry. In all cases, the common entrance tutor(s) we introduce will be familiar with the entrance requirements for all of the leading schools, including Eton, Harrow, Westminster, St Paul’s, Dulwich and Winchester.
Successful preparation for Common Entrance ISEB examinations requires a thorough understanding of the Common Entrance science mark scheme. We only recommend Common Entrance science tutors who are able to provide this. They will give lessons in exam technique and provide detailed feedback on past papers – all delivered in a style and at a pace perfectly suited to your son or daughter.
GCSE Science Tuition
At GCSE (or IGCSE) level, science can be taught as individual tripos, or as a combined course. A Level Science Tuition
Many students find the transition from GCSE to A Level science to be surprisingly daunting. Even with a solid foundation in GCSE or IGCSE science, the breadth and depth of A Level science can cause even the brightest student to come unstuck.
We believe that the key to successful A Level science tuition is for students to adapt a rigorous and structured approach to revision that will be based heavily on understanding and answering exam questions. We only recommend private tutors who are familiar with the requirements of the A Level exam boards, and who are able to provide clear and detailed feedback that is in line with the mark scheme your child will be following.
Pre-U Science Tuition
We offer introductions to expert Pre-U science tutors who will help your child both with subject knowledge, but also to develop independent study. The Pre U science tutors we introduce fully understand the syllabus requirements, which is vital whether your child is aiming for a Pass (P2), a Merit (M2) or Distinction (D2).
For even the brightest students, the pressure of taking one or several Pre-U courses in the Sixth Form, alongside A Levels, means that extra help is often essential. Rather than waiting until the last minute, we recommend that private tutors are engaged at the outset, to help plan workloads and make a strategy to prevent the student becoming overwhelmed. Tuition can then be stepped up if there is a particular problem area.
(IB) International Baccalaureate Science Tuition
Engaging an experienced International Baccalaureate science tutor is fraught with challenges; principally because the number of good IB science tutors is limited. Many tutors who teach A Level science will claim to be able to teach the IB, but in fact it is a very different syllabus, with a fundamentally different mark scheme and assessment methodology. Whereas the A Level focuses on depth, the IB considers breadth and independent thinking.
At Simply Learning Tuition we introduce science private tutors who really understand the requirements of the IB. All are thoroughly vetted and will have a high 2.1 or 1st class degree in a science subject. Many will be Post Graduate scientists. If your child has chosen to study IB science as a prerequisite for a university course, such as physics, engineering or astronomy it is likely that they will have to score a 6 or 7 in their IB science exams to gain their university place.
We will also be able to introduce an experience International Baccalaureate science private tutor if your child is studying science as part of the Middle Years Programme (MYP).
