I love helping people to learn about the world around them and I am passionate about my subjects. Tutoring is something I enjoy greatly and I can’t think of a better reason to do it than that! I think that a combination of genuine enthusiasm, patience, encouragement, good humour, organisation and a great understanding of the subjects that I teach are largely responsible for my successes as a tutor.
I have been actively involved in teaching people in some capacity or environment for at least 10 years and so I have had extensive practice and understand how to bring about those elusive penny-dropping moments!
I graduated from Durham University in Natural Sciences. I am a qualified teacher who completed a PGCE with Distinction from Canterbury Christ Church University whilst on the Teach First programme. I have since worked for an educational charity which places PhD students in schools to deliver university style tutorials. As part of this role I’ve helped PhD students develop tutorial programmes in a variety of subjects.
My recent tuition experience includes:
– 13+ Common Entrance preparation for the Sciences and Maths (the boy achieved A’s in all sciences and Maths).
– Year 8 home schooling placement for Autumn Term 2012. The tuition covered the Sciences and Maths. The student went on to integrate well into the curriculum of his new school in January 2013 although the client has since withdrawn him to receive further home schooling as she feels it offers more support. The client also requested home schooling for the student’s younger daughter and son. Bespoke tuition programmes were designed for each following extensive consultation with the client and advice about the content of the National Curriculum at Key Stages 2 and 3.
– Maths tuition for a boy in Year 5 who was beginning to fall behind at school. With just an hour a week, his confidence and results have now both greatly improved and he is capably tackling tasks that would normally be set for students in Key Stage 3 (years 7-9).
– I have worked for a university access charity called The Brilliant Club to create and run tutorial programmes to be delivered to school students to widen university access. This has included working with PhD students on curriculum design, managing a team of teachers to create access schemes of work and running events to give students advice on UCAS applications and personal statements. These events were designed around advice received from admissions tutors from a range of universities and the head of the Russell Group.
Apart from teaching, I enjoy reading, running and cooking, when I’m not spending time with my friends or family. I am also researching for a book on the real lives of the samurai, I enjoy travelling extensively and I’m a qualified scuba diver, having completed marine conservation work in the Pacific.
