Philip is a fantastic tutor. He uses his extensive classroom experience and deeply specialised knowledge to make Geography fascinating for his students.
My specialist subject is Geography. For the past five years, I have worked as an Examiner for various examination boards, marking their IGCSE and A-Level papers. This gives me a keen insight into the examination process, which allows my teaching and tutoring to be tailored effectively to the needs to the examination. Whilst I do not believe that a pupil should be taught to pass an examination, this experience allows me a keen insight into the public examination process. I understand what the examiners want to see, which allows me to tailor my tutoring to develop a thorough understanding of the topics, and allow the student to express their ideas effectively.
Originally from near Manchester, I studied for my Geography degree at the University of Edinburgh (2:1), after which I spent time living abroad before returning the UK, and London, to complete my PGCE course (Secondary Geography at The Institute of Education).
I have worked at one of London’s top independent boy’s schools for the past 7 years, achieving consistently and strong examination performances from my students.
I am a classroom teacher of Geography, with experience of teaching the full Senior School age range (11-18). I am particularly proud of the consistent excellent results that my students achieve, at both GCSE and A-Level.
I offer tutoring for all public examination levels and all examination boards.
At GCSE, I am especially familiar with the AQA syllabuses, together with the Cambridge International Examinations IGCSE course. Guidance with coursework and preparation for skills-based examinations is an important part of my teaching.
At A-Level, I can offer tuition across the range of modules and topics (both physical and human geography), including the synoptic and issues-based papers.
Below are a selection of students I have worked with outside of the school setting:
Edexcel IGCSE: I tutored Will during his Easter break to structure his revision plans, and to familiarise him with the exam structure and technique.
AQA GCSE: I tutored Joe on a weekly basis to prepare for his GCSE exams. Joe had a keen interest in the subject, but was predicted to achieve a grade well below his potential. One-to-one sessions allowed Joe to build his knowledge and develop confidence in his ability, and he went on to achieve a very respectable grade.
Edexcel IGCSE: I worked with Emmanuelle over a number of sessions in the May half-term to finalise her preparation for the IGCSE exam. The focus was exam technique, in particular developing answers to longer questions.
AQA A2 Geography: I tutored Aramide during the May half-term to prepare for her A2 topics paper. She had revised hard before I met her, but lacked confidence in her own ability.
AQA AS Geography: I worked with Peter on a weekly basis over 3 months leading up to his AS exams. Initially aimed to support his school work, we then focused on exam technique, and developing his knowledge and recall of case studies, resulting in a very strong A-grade performance.
Hobbies and Interests
I try to travel as much as possible: in addition to expeditions with school, I have visited Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia and various European destinations closer to home in recent years.
I have a lifelong interest in aviation, which I pursue in my free time and also, to a degree, though my involvement with the Combined Cadet Force at School.
I enjoy swimming and keeping fit, in particular running, and have taken part in 10km and half-marathon events over recent years. I attend a weekly ballroom and latin-american dancing class, which provides a break from the working week.
