Academic Subjects

Sometimes, its better to learn in a small group: particularly for language courses, Common Entrance 11+ and 13+ mock exams and interview preparation.

We run several courses throughout the year, timed exactly for when you need them. This includes 11+ and 13+ revision classes during the Christmas holidays, and Easter revision sessions in the run up to the GCSEs. We also hold weekend classes and regularly put together bespoke Passport for Life courses.

Courses are a great way for children to learn: they are focused, with clear goals and structures; they allow for rapid progress in a short space of time;

and they are fun and sociable, as children work together over projects and learning.

We put together courses throughout the year, but we also offer bespoke programmes for our parents.

A full calendar of events will be available shortly, but please get in touch in the meantime if you would like to find out more.

As part of our Passport for Life service, we work closely with communications and public speaking coaches, who help their students to overcome their personal barriers so that they can speak openly, persuasively and authoritatively.

We work with Joanna Crosses, who has an extensive background as a print journalist, broadcaster and television presenter with the BBC and ITV, and has published 5 books on the Art of Communication. She has coached police officers, lawyers, politicians, teachers, bankers and charity workers,

helping them to find the confidence to perform at their best whilst being themselves.

Whether they face interviews, performances or presentations, Joanna can help your child to perfect the art of communication. She offers practical techniques which help her students to know their audience, feel confident in their delivery, present information in an engaging way, and speak assertively and persuasively.

Educational Holiday Courses

If your child is an expert skier, horseman, chess master, musician or ballet student, we will create the bespoke package that will be the dream holiday for them but still reassure you that they are learning!

We offer an array of holiday courses in far-flung destinations. We can create bespoke tours and programmes for your child to match their interests and educational needs, incorporating fun activities with focussed learning.

These courses typically include 4 hour of private tuition a day, alongside sporting activities, sightseeing or volunteer work. It’s the perfect mirror to our company ethos; the idea is to give children something that is hard work, but also an incredible learning experience, with memories that will last a lifetime, and for parents, the knowledge that they have done the very best to prepare children for their forthcoming exams.

One of our most exciting courses was a stay at an estancia in the heart of polo county in Argentina. The children, aged 13 and over, were accompanied by expert private tutors. After preparing for upcoming exams in the morning, they spent the afternoon riding horses, playing polo and helping the gauchos prepare the evening asado.

Whilst the parents could be assured that their children are learning what they need to excel at school, or fly through their exams – at the same time as having one of the most rewarding holidays of their life.

During the day the Idler London HQ operates as a calm, quiet bookshop selling beautiful, useful and unusual books and gifts. They serve Monmouth coffee and cake, and there is an enclosed medieval garden to retreat to.

They teach philosophy, astronomy, calligraphy, music, business skills, English grammar, ukulele, public speaking, singing, drawing, self-defence and other subjects.

You can learn about the ideas of Plato or learn the ukulele, in convivial surroundings with like-minded and interesting people. Recordings of lectures are available to Friends and Fellows of the Idler Academy. This means overseas and out-of-town idlers can join the fun.
