A Level Retakes

A Levels are the most commonly retaken exams in the UK for many reasons; most pupils struggle with the leap up from GCSE, while others find it difficult to manage the exam pressure or to work more independently. If your child achieved lower grades than expected or needed for their chosen university, an A Level retake and resit tutor will help them to improve their results at the second attempt.

We introduce the highest calibre of A Level tutors for retakes, who can provide your child with new and efficient exam and revision techniques, build their confidence and ensure that one bad result won’t stand in the way of gaining a place at their chosen university.

Our retake tuition is available in-person in London or online anywhere in the world.

Can you retake a levels?

Yes. If you weren’t happy with your A Level results or didn’t get the results you needed to meet a university offer, you can retake your A Levels. You can sit the exams a second time in May/June the year after your original A Levels. You can then apply to jobs or universities with your new grade(s) when these are released on A Level results day.

Benefits of retaking A Levels

Resitting A Levels gives you a second chance to get the grades you need. If you fell short of a university offer, want to improve your grades to apply for jobs, or simply don’t feel like your results do you justice, retaking A Levels allows you try and improve your grades. With another year to prepare, you can cover the course content more thoroughly than first time around and address any areas of weakness. This gives you a better chance of securing the result you are looking for.

How can you resit A Levels?

There are a few ways to resit your A Levels.

At school

Some schools allow students to enrol to retake their A Levels at school. You should check with your teachers whether this is possible, as not all schools offer resits. If it is, you will be taught in the classroom as you were first time around, and then resit the exam the following summer.

In a college

You can retake your A Levels in specialist independent colleges and sixth forms. These are often designed for students resitting, and feature small class sizes and a focus on exam technique.

Fees for this vary by college, but are likely to be more than £6000 per A Level.

With a private tutor

If you are looking for expert 1-1 preparation for your A Level retakes, working with an experienced private tutor is a highly effective way to retake your exams. Unlike in school or a college, the tutor is solely focused on what you struggle with in the syllabus, and can adapt their teaching entirely to your needs and preferred learning style. The results are often transformative, with students improving by several grades.

It is important to remember that if you are not attending a school or college, you will need to register as a private candidate to sit the exams.

At SLT, we work with expert private tutors for A Level retakes. We can also support with exam registration. If you are interested in finding out more, contact us and one of our friendly team will be able to assist you.

When can you retake A Levels?

A Level resit students take the exams on the same day as those sitting them for the first time. January retakes are no longer offered, so the exams will take place in May or June.

Every exam board will have a different timetable, so it is advisable to check the website of the exam board you are taking for exact dates.

How many times can you retake A Levels?

You can retake most A Level subjects up to four times. However, some subjects, like English and Maths, have no limit on the number of times you can retake them.

It is not necessarily advisable to retake A Levels more than once or twice, though. University admissions teams might be impressed by a retake grade which improves first time from a C to an A, but if they see that you have retaken the same subject four times, they may believe that you are not naturally strong in it.

Cost of resitting A Levels

The cost of resitting A Levels depends on how you choose to retake them. Attending a college will incur course fees of above £6,000 per subject. Working with a private tutor is likely to be charged hourly.

If you are retaking A Levels as a private candidate, there are also fees associated with registering with an exam centre. These are typically around £150-400 per subject.

How to prepare for A Level retakes

If you decide to retake your A Levels, you should begin preparation as soon as possible. At SLT, we recommend working with an expert private tutor for a full academic year if possible. Regular sessions 2-3 times per week, with homework set in between, will ensure that you cover the entire syllabus.

It is advisable to begin by going over the A Level curriculum and identifying the areas you struggled with the most, as these should be the focus of your preparation. Requesting your exam scripts from the first time you took your A Levels is also recommended to give you a clear idea of where you won and lost the all-important marks.

Then, when the exams are around two months away, you should begin revision. Create a realistic revision timetable and don’t forget to include plenty of time to work on practice papers, exam technique and time management. You can read more revision tips for A Levels in our blog.

What happens if your A Level resit results are worse than the original results?

Around half of students who resit their A Levels do not improve their grades or do worse second time around. In this case, there is no way to hide this from universities – they will be able to see your original and resit grades.

If your grades do not improve, you may need to apply for a different course or to a different university to be accepted. You can also resit a second time, though this will take another year and will not guarantee improvement. It is also worth checking with the university you are applying to if they would consider a second retake grade.

A Level retake colleges in London

There are several colleges in London which prepare students for A Level resits, including Albemarle College, MPW, DLD College and Collingham College.

If you are unsure whether working with a private tutor or attending a college would be better for you or your child, you can contact our team of education consultants who will be able to advise you.

Do universities accept A Level resits?

Yes, though each university will have its own policy on A Level retakes. Some, like Cambridge, only accept retakes for certain courses, while others, like UCL or Imperial, will consider A Level resits on a case-by-case basis.

It is important to note that universities will be able to see that you have retaken your A Levels when you apply. This will not necessarily be held against you – especially if your first result was affected by mitigating circumstances. Either way, strong improvement in your resit will show that you are hard-working, resilient, and capable of strong academic performance – all qualities which will appeal to universities.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you retake A Levels without going back to school?

Yes. You can either enrol in an independent college to retake your A Levels, or if you are looking for 1-1 preparation outside of the school environment, working with a private tutor is a highly effective way to prepare. Every year, our tuition service helps students improve their grades in their A Level resits.

It is important to remember that if you are not attending a school or college, you will need to register as a private candidate to sit the exams.

  • Does resitting A Levels look bad?

Not necessarily – though you should remember that universities will be able to see that you have retaken your A Levels when you apply.

This need not be a bad thing, especially if your first result was affected by mitigating circumstances. Improving your grade in your resit will show that you are hard-working, resilient, and capable of strong academic performance – all qualities which will appeal to universities.

  • Can you retake A Levels in November?

No. A Level retakes were allowed in November over the Covid period, but this has been discontinued. The only time of year to retake your A Levels is in May/June.

  • Can you retake A Levels while at university?

It is possible to register as a private candidate and retake A Levels alongside your university studies. However, the workload is likely to be intensive and some universities may discourage (or disallow you altogether) from doing so while you are studying there.

  • How much does it cost to resit a levels?

The cost of retaking A Levels varies depending on how you retake them. Colleges will charge upwards of £6,000 per subject, while working with a private tutor is likely to be charged hourly.

If you are retaking A Levels as a private candidate, there are also fees associated with registering with an exam centre. These are typically around £150-400 per subject.
