My specialist subjects are English and Humanities at 7+, 11+ and 13+. I also teach Maths, Science and Art.
I have a very positive and enthusiastic approach to teaching and believe that encouragement and building confidence in students is the only way for them to develop enough self-belief to feel uninhibited and be able to be truly imaginative and creative. I am very patient and have a calm temperament and never become frustrated or angry with students. In my opinion disciplinary confrontation only ever produces negative results.
In my role as a tutor I believe that I am there to provide emotional support as well as academic and I will take the time to find the route of problems and work through them quietly and slowly. Ultimately, I am very non-judgemental and always want students to be able to feel confident enough to take risks, experiment and make mistakes.
I also feel very strongly that there can be no standardised model for teaching. Every student learns in a different way and I will always strive to develop creative and innovative ways to engage each individual student.
As an undergraduate, I studied Fine Art at the University of Oxford and achieved the highest First in my year, (2001-4). After this I completed a Fine Art MA at the Royal College of Art, leaving with a distinction (2005-7).
I grew up in West Wales and attended my local school, leaving with three ‘A’ grade A-Levels in English, Geography and History. I also received an award for the highest History result in the county.

When I am not teaching, I work as an artist making large-scale sculpture, installations and paintings. I achieved a distinction for my MA at The Royal College of Art and now exhibit frequently, in galleries both here and abroad. These have included The Foundation Cartier in Paris, Koraalberg Gallery in Antwerp, The ICA, Flowers East, and The Wapping Project in London.
I also sing and play the cello. I had a choral scholarship at Oxford and played in the Oxford University Philharmonia orchestra. I enjoy walking and sailing. In the past, I completed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award expedition in the Wicklow Mountains and completed voyages aboard the tall ships, T. S. Royalist and The Malcolm Miller.
Quite often, when students have needed to re-engage with learning due to a loss of enjoyment or confidence, I have approached teaching Maths, English and Science through artist methods, which has always proved very successful.
